The Secrets to Living a Fantastic Life, by Dr. Allen Lycka and Harriet Tinka, bring about a question from the start, if life granted you that “Golden Ticket” (Dr. Lycka 16), giving you a second chance at life, what would you do with it? Both writers take us on this journey of recollections from tragedies that empowered them to write this book. They discover and share with us their “Golden Pearl” secrets. They came up with 20 “Golden Pearls,” however they only reveal 13 with us in the book, hinting at a sequel.

Dr. Allen Lycka is a thought leader, philanthropist, and dermatologist. He was 52 years old when he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease, and given six months to live, due to a flapping foot. He thought “I had a dropped foot. To prove him wrong, I was not going to die” (Dr. Lycka 13). He recounts his story while sharing with us how he had to climb out of the angry world he found himself in.

Harriet Tinka is an accountant, marathon runner, empowerment youth worker, and former fashion model. As a teenage model and a student at a university she found a new friend that soon becomes her tormentor. He kidnaps, stabs, and leaves her for dead. She recounts waking up at the hospital “...a prisoner wearing a wristband with a serial number” (Harriet 17). She meets a nine year old girl at the hospital in a wheelchair that teaches her that “...by accepting myself, I can now own my story” (Harriet 22). This empowered her to claw out of the depressed stage she found herself in.

The “Golden Pearls” are separated into segments of Love, Inspiration, Victory, Vulnerability, Intention (Purpose), Non-Negotiables, Forgiveness, Attitude, Thankfulness, Tenacity, Laughter, Enthusiasm, Empowerment, and the bonus is Fear. Through these they guide us by sharing personal/shared stories, anecdotes, and quotes.

The book is written entirely in a dialogue format, making it an easy read, however difficult to believe that in a conversation one can recount so many details, including quotes, dates, names, and facts of today and in history. Even if you do not find yourself in some form of “self-help” mode, there is at least one story, quote, anecdote, or fact that will resonate with you in some manner. It is a well written and professionally edited book of experiences with only two corrections needed. This book deserves a 3 out of 4 stars for the sound guidance given.
