Review by cmkaelin -- The Spirituality Puzzle
The Spirituality Puzzle: What causes someone to become a child of God and have assurance of eternal life? by James and Renee Rondinone is a thoroughly researched and thought-out book addressing the question many Christians have asked themselves throughout the years. While discussing what exact circumstances, choices, and personalities are necessary for a person to become a child of God and gain sure access to heaven, the Rondinones pull many examples directly from the Bible to help their audience learn directly from the experiences of biblical characters, both famous and lesser-known.
There are many aspects of The Spirituality Puzzle that I enjoyed. What I liked most was the inclusion of suggested Bible readings, as well as actual Bible quotes. To me, this not only gave the authors credibility, but also made reading the book like doing my own personal Bible study. People can read a little bit everyday, and I think that it outlines the study in a way that will resonate with the book’s intended audience. The Spirituality Puzzle is chock full of important information, so each section can be quite dense. Therefore, I also loved that each chapter is wrapped up nicely with a summary of the lessons learned in that chapter.
While the authors’ personal tone was another definite appeal of the book, there were many repetitive rhetorical questions asked which I found distracting and which would have been better and more professional simply as sentences. This would help the overall flow and readability as the reader continues on from point to point. Nonetheless, the book was incredibly well-edited and without mistakes.
The Spirituality Puzzle was definitely an above-average book with well-researched insights into important questions, which is why I gave it a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. Every point that the authors make is introduced after vivid examples and explanations of characters and stories in the Bible. However, I did not give it a fourth star because this thorough work could sometimes lead the book to be quite repetitive.
In addition, I thought that the authors skimmed over some observations from their examples that could have added some new life to their answers. For example, based on the examples given, I think that each character and story had more in common than simply just believing in God and/or behaving righteously. For example, every character described in The Spirituality Puzzle who stumbled upon a relationship with God did so unexpectedly and at a pivotal life moment, such as the birth of a child. It was usually not something that character was actively seeking out at that point in their life (at least, not that we know of). Nevertheless, this book will be the perfect addition to the library of any Christian looking to deepen their faith, their relationship with God, and their own understanding of salvation.
