Review by OwlRoads -- He is Alive: Science Finds Jesus
He is Alive: Science Finds Jesus by John S. Carpenter, MSW, LCSW is a nonfiction novel which uses science to prove that Jesus Christ is still alive today in our everyday lives. By combining Bible stories, Vatican-approved accounts and miracles, and scientific studies from experts, Carpenter pieces together the evidence that Jesus is really and truly alive.
I am rating this book 3 out of 4 stars. I chose not to rate it 2 stars because of how well researched the book was. There was such an abundance of evidence from both the Catholic faith and scientific study that by the end, Carpenter has provided an extremely compelling case for the real presence of Jesus Christ. However, I felt it necessary not to give this book the full 4 stars due to the repetitive nature of the format. This text is 411 pages long not including Appendix 1, Appendix 2, and the About the Author section. To put it simply, it is a beefy book. I found myself growing tired of the way information was given because each chapter had the same exact structure. While this is definitely a personal preference, I think most readers enjoy when even non-fiction texts have different types of chapters to break up some of the monotony. Nevertheless, the information held within is well explained and quite interesting.
My favorite aspect of the book was how simple it was to understand. The novel contains many Bible verses, which can be difficult to comprehend due to the old English or old customs written about that no longer happen in modern day society. This, along with various Catholic terms many readers might be unfamiliar with, can make the prospect of reading the book a daunting task. I am happy to report that the glossary at the start and explanations throughout the book make it clear to read and understand! The part I disliked most about the book was the repetitiveness mentioned earlier.
This book would most appeal to Catholics or those considering becoming a Catholic, as it is all about a specifically Catholic belief that Jesus is really present in our daily lives and in the Host. However, this book may also be appealing to those who like to learn about other religions, cultures, and beliefs that are not their own, because it is written so that you don’t need to be a practicing Catholic to understand it. I would not recommend He is Alive: Science Finds Jesus to children under 12, or those who do not handle talk of blood or gore well. The book does mention these things while explaining some miracles and Biblical stories.
I enjoyed reading this book, and would like to add that my viewpoint has certainly changed from before I started it. All in all, He is Alive: Science Finds Jesus presents a well thought out, engaging, and thought provoking argument for the actual presence of Jesus Christ.
