Review by szanta3030 -- The Secrets To Living A Fantast...
"It's not what happens... It's about what you do with what happens." - Epictetus - is the main quote from the book The Secrets to Living a Fantastic Life and the motto of its two authors - Harriet Tinka and Dr. Allen Lycka. Two Survivors Reveal 13 Golden Pearls They've Discovered - that's the book's subtitle, which mostly explains the content. Authors, in the beginning, share their trauma stories that opened their eyes, and thanks to which they can live now a happier and better life. Dr. Lycka was a world-famous cosmetic dermatologist at the peaks of his career when he was misdiagnosed with a deadly disease and told that he had only 6 months left to live. Harriet had been a successful model since her teenage years and was at a university when one of her friends became obsessed with her. He kidnapped her, beat, and stabbed and left her to die. Both authors have been through near-dead experiences that taught them a lot about life, and now they share it with us.
The book contains the authors' stories and, most importantly, 13 chapters, one for every golden pearl – thing we need in order to lead a better life. Each chapter begins with a short story illustrating the pearl and conversation between authors. They not only teach us how to apply all that wisdom but also provide us with some historical information, like Greek words for love or Abraham Lincoln's way to become a president. Stories represent things like love or empowerment and each one is unique, some are moving.
What I liked about this book was that it's a rather short but complex guide to be happy. Its content, the pearls were really well-explained and easy to understand. The Secrets to Living a Fantastic Life contained a lot of quotes, some from very well-known people and it gave us concrete instructions on how to apply every piece of advice to our everyday lives.
There were some things I disliked, too. It was mostly the book's form. For me, some stories weren't either deep or interesting, and the dialog between authors seemed fake. I think they tried to make things a bit less serious, they added some jokes, but I found them rather tiring and forced, and they definitely weren't needed.
After all, I like this book and I give it 3 out of 4 stars. I don't give it 2 stars because there is a lot of wisdom and I think applying those pearls can really make a difference in our lives, but I can't give it 4 stars because I didn't really enjoy its structure. The Secrets to Living a Fantastic Life is suitable for anyone who wants to live a happier, deeper life and have fewer regrets in the end. It is well-edited and doesn't contain any profanities, its language is rather formal. I recommend it to everyone who is looking for inspiration.
