Creating Literary Stories: A Fiction Writer's Guide by William H. Coles is a remarkable, elaborate reference book useful to any writer meaning to brave the complex creation of literary stories.

Coles crafts a comprehensible and practical handbook that offers ample advice and knowledge on the process of creating literary works that have value and well-crafted meaning. This guide reads straightforward from the very beginning, with a clear structure and index to help the readers situate themselves in the panoply of topics being discussed.

While defining the literary fiction story and its key constituents, the book seeks not to restrict its readers when it comes to building their own stories, but to hand them viable tools and skills in order to best help them succeed at composing accomplished and distinguished works of literary fiction.

Touching on the key elements of literary fiction, such as narration, point of view, character development, POVs, etc, the author draws up an informative and useful guide, creating a great resource for authors who wish to learn how to manipulate their writing style to maximize reader engagement and story excellence, while still maintaining their originality.

Each chapter explores these essential elements in a thorough and concise way, quoting examples from both failed and successful uses of the literary skills in discussion. It goes the extra mile by offering brief summaries at the end of chapters to help provide a clear and succinct understanding of the author’s arguments and by providing structural questions that will surely assist the reader in revising their work and in making sure it lives up to its potential. The author even wraps up his lesson with an assortment of questions that will prompt any writer following this guidebook to assess their own purpose and stories.

An interesting fact to note is that even non-authors will immensely enjoy this book, as I did, because it allows them to learn more about the process of writing literary fiction and the dexterity necessary to write compelling stories.

Coles’s own experience infuses this guide with well-informed content; the author has studied fiction in countless workshops and courses alongside several distinguished masters of the craft, as well as being exceptionally well-versed in many different domains of the written (and even audible) word. This added a sense of verity and authenticity to the guide itself, as the extent of Coles’s grasp on the field of Literature helps you trust his judgment and, in consequence, his advice.

I deeply enjoyed reading this and would recommend it to both professionals in the field as well as those who are simply in love with the written word. I decided to rate this book 3 out of 4 stars instead of a higher rating, merely because of a number of typos.
