In a world full of loss, “Dying Well: Our Journey of Love and Loss” by Susan Ducharme Hoben guides us through the journey of not only losing a loved one, but also teaching through an informative manner about the circumstances and events that occur before, during, and after. After fighting off her cancer, Susan Hoben and husband Bruce Hoben receive life-shattering news that causes the couple to battle the terminal illness once more together, hand and hand until the bittersweet end. “Dying Well: Our Journey of Love and Loss” is a rollercoaster of emotions, with the ability to leave the reader in overjoy and relief but also sorrow and holding back tears. I would find myself eager to read the next page, feeling my heart flutter in excitement or sink in dread with just the read of the chapter’s title.

All the mentioned characters were memorable in their own way, Hoben made them come to life with the ways they would interact with each other or the main cast either through current or past events, Introducing them in a way that felt neither rushed nor delayed. As some chapters took time to focus on the character through everyday settings such as holidays or the occasional gathering, the reader could feel the bond family members and friends would have, as well as feel the hostility and intensity some would demonstrate towards others.

Susan Hoben managed to make the story memorable, but informative as well. Showing the process she and her husband would take to receive medical attention and how real and overwhelming an illness such as cancer can actually be. As they journeyed through the ordeal, hitting dead ends and managing ways around them, it provides a sense of empowerment that just because one contracts a lethal disease, does not mean its the end of the line. Introducing the reader through real-life procedures that they may be unfamiliar with, and showing the impact it has on not only the patient but as well as those around them.

It provides understanding about why one may act in a particular way during their final days, how to handle strong emotions one may feel, the thoughts they may receive, how illness cares not for social standing or personal attributes, and how quick our lives can be changed drastically in a matter of days.

I give this story 3 out of 4 stars, The book was exceptionally flawless and touching, always managing to bring a tear to my eye or feel any sort of strong emotion through its storytelling ability. It’s educational and tackles a taboo and sensitive topic that others shy away from in a direct, but respectful manner. I’d recommend this book to anyone who may have experienced the loss of a loved one, is currently going through the experience or would like to learn and understand more about the experience.
