Allyn Raifstanger’s book, We Don’t Just Eat Lettuce!, offers a unique twist on your typical recipe book. While many recipe books solely have, well, recipes, Raifstanger includes his experiences throughout the process of converting to veganism. With in-depth narration and unique recipes We Don’t Just Eat Lettuce! is a must-read for anyone interested in going vegan. For the reasons listed above, I rate this book four out of four stars, as this book covers pretty much everything anyone would need to know before going vegan.

Raifstanger does an excellent job of telling what led up to his choice of going vegan and why he feels that many others could also benefit from a plant-based diet. He offers valuable insight into all of the reasons to stop eating animal products including decreased risk of many common health issues, reducing your global footprint, and an increase in energy. As a meat lover I began reading this book with the intention of getting another perspective on what a healthy diet looks like, but I did not really believe my mind would be significantly changed. By the end I found myself seriously reconsidering my diet. To make the switch to a plant-based diet easier Raifstanger also incorporates vegan recipes that he finds customers at his restaurant enjoy. According to him, some non-vegans prefer his vegan alternatives to the original version of a dish!

Raifstanger’s recipes were easily one of my favorite parts of the book. What’s the point in convincing readers to go vegan if they don’t know what to cook? His recipes take popular dishes, like chili, jambalaya, and burgers, and turn them into delicious vegan alternatives. While I will admit I have yet to make one of the recipes in this book, I definitely took note of multiple recipes I want to make soon. I was unable to find any parts of this book I disliked, and between the entertaining narration and unique recipes my expectations for this book were easily met and exceeded.

I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in living a healthy lifestyle, reducing their global footprint, or even just finding new recipes to try. In short, I think pretty much everyone should read this book.

With exceptional editing, meaning no spelling or grammar errors, entertaining narration, and tasty recipes you just might find that We Don’t Just Eat Lettuce! changes the way you eat and think of food forever.
