Review by cooldork7 -- The BadRedhead Media 30-Day Book ...
If you’re looking for an introduction into the world of marketing self-published books, there may be a book for you. It’s called The BadRedheadMedia 30-Day Book Challenge, by Rachel Thompson (the BadRedhead in BadRedheadMedia). A published author, blogger, and book marketer herself, Thompson started this “challenge” to pass along what she’s learned in over ten years of writing, blogging, and self-publishing books.
The book is divided into four separate weeks of activities covering marketing your book (and most especially, yourself as an author) on social media outlets such as Twitter, Facebook, and even Instagram and YouTube. In week three, Thompson starts laying out how to create a marketing plan for your book. Finally, the author wraps up with suggestions on creating an author website and on creating “buzz” for your book.
Very early on, Thompson states: “It’s important to note that if you are marketing a book, this challenge takes into account that your book is well-written, professionally edited, formatted, and designed.” While the book is fairly well-written — at times it sounds more like an extended tweet than an actual book — it does not have the appearance of a professionally edited or formatted book. Inconsistencies of header and paragraph formatting appear throughout: both bold and italic fonts are used for emphasis interchangeably, paragraph indentation and spacing is not consistent, and a large number of links simply do not work.
In addition, Thompson claims to have written the book not just for authors, but for bloggers and businesspeople. However, there’s very little information specific to those who just blog or those who just want to market their business. Unless you’re specifically marketing a book, her advice doesn’t carry over well to bloggers or to businesspeople.
What is good and refreshing about the book is the author herself. She is funny, engaging, passionate, and savvy about her chosen areas of writing and about book marketing. I wound up following her author and book marketing Twitter accounts and will certainly use a number of her tips in my own blogging career. She also has complied an impressive list of resources at the end of the book.
This book would appeal to those who have written and self-published a book and want to market it properly. Even if you haven’t written that book yet, but still want to be a self-published writer, The BadRedheadMedia 30-Day Book Challenge might get you started; Thompson emphasizes the importance of building an audience for your book for up to three years before the book is even published
There is only one instance of possible profanity in the book: on page 73, paragraph 1, sentence two, the word “huge-ass” is used. (“Huge” probably would suffice.) There are no erotic scenes in the book.
Finally, I give this book 2 out of 4 stars. Why? It’s a fun and helpful read, but it’s not an example of the well-edited and well-formatted e-book I was expecting from an experienced author and book marketer.
