Review by Bets_9 -- Away To Me, My Love by Naomi McDonald
Away to Me, My Love: A Sheepdog's Tale of Two Lives by Naomi McDonald is the true story of one woman's journey into the world of sheepherding. It all starts when Naomi hears about some sheep herding dogs that a friend has for sale. This brings back a memory of the first time Naomi watched competitive sheep herding and how it instilled a lifelong dream to participate in it. Naomi tries to put the dogs out of her mind because she is busy enough with her horse training business, but finds she can't. Naomi eventually takes one of the dogs and from there she and her dog Luke are tied together while learning the art of sheepherding. The path that is filled with heartbreaks and pitfalls is more than just a physical one, but also a path for Naomi's soul. However, before Naomi is ready to get to the best parts of her journey she must work through some childhood trauma and her own self-doubt.
I was hooked on this book from the beginning when Naomi is riding her horse and then begins a conversation with a friend about dogs. I mean, come on. Who wouldn't be enticed with horses and dogs in the mix? I enjoyed this story, my heart ran with Naomi in everything she did. Especially when she first meets the waterlogged and frightened 9-month-old Luke. I believe I fell in love with him just as she did. I identified with Naomi through all of her self-doubt and lack of confidence. She really is a strong woman and someone we can look up to.
This book is billed as a true story and is filled with interesting information about sheepherding and ranching in general. I learned so many things about this world. I now have a much better understanding of the ranching/farming world and their views towards the animals in their care. I love a book that can teach me something and expand my outlook on life. This book was well to my liking.
This book would be best received by adult women I think just because of the subject matter. There is nothing offensive in this book at all, no profanity, sex, or violence. I think this book is suitable to be read by anyone interested, from a young adult on up. It does contain some unusual views on religion, spirituality, and reincarnation. There is talk of the spirts in nature and even past life progression.
I give this book a 4 out of 4 stars. This book made me cry and I haven't had a book do that in a long time. This book appears to be professionally edited, and well written. I loved watching Naomi and Luke grow while they followed their path.
