Review by fnavarrete -- The Second Eve by Bette Boersma
The Second Eve: Understanding Biblical Equality by Bette Boersma is an autobiography about where women stand in the Christian Church. But there seems to be an underlying message to this story that unfortunately does not only appear in religion but society. What weaves together Boersma’s story is the question "Can I believe that men and women are equal and still believe the Bible is true and it is God’s Word for us today?”. In The Second Eve, Bette Boersmag helps women of faith emancipate themselves from fabricated beliefs to unlock the truth of who a woman can be in the eyes of God.
In Boersma's The Second Eve she questions and argues the potential equality of men and women over biblical gender roles in the conservative Christian community. To which she masterfully accomplishes supporting her argument many times within the story. One of them being the (The Egalitarian View). Based on the teachings of biblical scripture “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male or female; for you are all one in Jesus Christ” (Galatians 3:28).
One of the many strengths of this beautifully written story is that there is a strong point of view. Although Boersma grew up with men occupying positions of power in the Church with certain situations arising she starts to question the male dominance of the religion. For instance, most advisors tried to steer her into either the secretarial tract or Christian education tract and not a leadership role. What makes this story more interesting is she is a trailblazer for women and little girls who are being misinformed and being treated unfairly.
One of the things I did not like in the story has nothing to do with her story, but a certain experience she went through. One of the few scenarios of how she was treated unfairly throughout the story that was not easy to digest was when she was fired for being pregnant. This story will make audiences angry, sad, and ashamed in society. But in the end it will all be worth the emotional roller coaster.
Overall. not only was this book extremely informative about the gender roles in Church but a story that unfortunately reflects the world as well. Boersma has made a book that is exceptionally well researched which cannot be said for many books about religion. However, with all that has been said I am pleased to rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This book was exceptionally well-edited with hardly any typos or spelling errors. The reason it has been given a perfect score is because she executes the purpose of this book with many arguments and answers them. This book is recommended to philosophers, religious scholars, and feminists.
