Junk Justice by Gerry Rising follows Rising's experience of the American justice system after he was accused of crimes relating to his failed health insurance business. We hear about his far from stellar attorneys to judges that do not seem fit to judge and over zealous prosecutors. The book takes us from his arrest all the way through to his appeals after he had finished his sentence.

As a fan of court cases and trials I expected to enjoy this book and I did enjoy it. The stories from Rising's time in federal prison were very interesting, heart warming and sometimes scary. The way he seemed to settle into prison life and even assist in making other inmates lives better is to be applauded and he should be proud of himself for doing that.

I appreciated some of the in depth descriptions of the alleged crimes even though some of it went over my head. As a UK citizen I don't have any experience with health insurance but after reading this book I understand more and I feel Rising did a good job of explaining these complexities but I do think these explanations go on too long at some points and would only be fully understood by someone who already has a good knowledge of this business.

Rising spends a lot of time expressing his innocence and I'm not totally convinced of this. I definitely agree that his attorneys did not do a good job, he was over charged and the judge was not as impartial as he should be but it does feel like, "the lady doth protest too much". Rising will not get so much sympathy from readers given the very factual way the book was written and the many appeals he continued to file even after his sentence was over. I would have liked to read more about his home life after leaving prison and how things had changed but these details are glossed over somewhat.

I give Junk Justice 3 out of four stars . I enjoyed the majority of the book but the over complex descriptions made some chapters quite boring and I think footnotes were over used, a lot of the footnotes were not required, they could have been written within the paragraph. I would have preferred more personal and family views, especially how his wife dealt with the return of her husband after his realease instead of the continuous complaints of unfair treatment.
