Review by LianaMayhew -- The Mindset by Ace Bowers
Born into a poor, blue-collar family, Ace Bowers didn't look like he could amount to much. His parents both abused alcohol and would fight every night, his older brother was in and out of prison, and the family was stone broke. Everything seemed to be fighting against young Ace. How could this poor, anxious boy, full of a great sense of embarrassment and resentment at his life, become a successful multi-millionaire at the age of 32?
The Mindset is an autobiographical story of Ace Bowers. The text is easy to follow, and at only 93 pages, (PDF) is a fairly quick read. I must admit, I don't usually go for memoirs, however, this book was highly recommended to me by a friend. I am so glad that I decided to give it a go. This book is an inspirational story of a young boy, handed a tough hand in life, who just didn't give up, and was determined to be the best that he could be.
I liked the whole book, from the way the author delved into his own thoughts and emotions, to the way he explained how you can change aspects in your own life, simply by changing your mindset and improving your motivation. I'm sure many people could relate to this book. Not necessarily the wealth that the author accumulated, but the struggles he endured. Alcoholic parents, poverty, anxiety, depression, and the usual coming-of-age troubles are all common issues that many of us could sympathize with.
During the book, I didn't notice any errors, so I would say that this has been professionally edited. The language was easy to understand, and there was no profanity. There was one mention of child molestation, however, this was brief and was not detailed. The issues with alcoholism may be a sensitive subject for some readers, but the author has done a fantastic job broaching the topic, therefore, I feel, as someone who can personally relate to his situation, this shouldn't be too hard to read for the audience. For these reasons, I would rate The Mindset 4 out of 4 stars.
In my opinion, this book would be suitable for ages 16 and over. I also believe that not only could this book inspire some readers in their own life goals, this could also help those who have suffered or are suffering similar issues, by showing that anything can be overcome.
'Mindset is a key component in your pursuit of success, for it is essentially the way you perceive yourself and your current circumstances. Motivation is everything.'-Ace Bowers
