Review by Yoanna_AL -- Creating Literary Stories: A Fict...
Bearing the sufficiently self-explanatory title in mind, CREATING LITERARY STORIES: A Fiction Writer`s Guide, written by William H. Coles is an over one hundred pages book about how to efficiently and engagingly write literary fictional stories. Having seen the light of day close to the end of the year 2015, the entire material seems to apparently be very well rooted in the author`s vast expertise, providing a wide range of both theoretical and practical information. In the sense, the book is structured into two main sections (if we were to leave the APPENDIX aside) simply entitled BOOK ONE and BOOK TWO, with the first one focusing on a more general approach of the literary story as a concept and the other more oriented on the creative process involved.
What I consider as being very appropriate to establish from the very beginning itself is the fact that the eventual audience of CREATING LITERARY STORIES: A Fiction Writer`s Guide, written by William H. Coles might not be as broad, as I do not personally perceive it as a leisure time piece of reading. Although it is not exactly a coursebook, its entire allure definitely tends towards the kind. Therefore, it might prove itself more useful and relevant for literature students, for example or maybe for notorious bookworms with high writing aspirations, so to say. Just to be clear, this way of targeting happens solely due to the purpose of this reading itself and not due to some major vocabulary complexities.
In what concerns the strong points of this book, I ought not to forget mentioning the level of awareness it is capable of raising, especially towards the way in which some literary fictional stories are poorly written; the latter implacably leading them to not often pass the test of time. Moreover, I would also bring the appendix in discussion. As unexpected as it might appear, I find both the information and the wise questions included there, quite crucial for the motivation of the potential literary fictional stories’ writers. And, if you add lots of extremely suggestive examples, bullet-lists, narrator insights and even inspirational approaches to different kind of words and their effect, all throughout the book, you end up with a quite helpful material, great even for further needed references.
With these being said, I will not restrain myself from awarding CREATING LITERARY STORIES: A Fiction Writer`s Guide, written by William H. Coles the score of 3 out of 4 stars, as the picky reader might still stumble across few editing perks, here and there and some certain pieces of information that might be perceived as quite repetitive, for the matter. Still, I strongly recommend it as the whole experience of reading it turned rather pleasant and I felt the author as doing his best to be as open and as friendly as possible to his potential readers.
To conclude with, if you are looking for a very well organized and well documented book in order to help better your literary fiction stories writing style or to help you better understand the whole framework of the genre, then this choice might definitely be worth a chance to be part of your reading wish list.
