Official Review: Life Changing Stories by SK Kang
Life Changing Stories by SK Kang is a memoir of a young man’s journey to try and be successful in life after the death of his parents. Kang loses his parents in a very short time span and he is sent to live with his older sister. However, many of his family members make him feel like a burden. To a young person’s self-esteem, this could be a horrendous experience, but Kang finds a way to stay positive and develops a strong relationship with God.
In this account, Kang tries to share his story and inspire others through his difficult life experiences. Such as the death of his parents, attempting to succeed in school, and self doubt creeping in during the worst times. The answer Kang comes to more often than not is God. Christian faith is a prominent theme in this book and Kang gives multiple examples from the Bible to highlight how people can live their lives to be thankful as well as prepared for every situation. However, the author also makes substantial and consistent movie references to help highlight his examples. Too many movie references. More than a few times the author appears to be writing a movie review rather than developing a credible argument.
I love that the author is sharing his story and how he developed a strong mentality in the face of adversity. Many people need guidance in their life and Kang found his mentor with the Christian God. The experiences Kang shares are personal and can help people in difficult situations, but I wish he focused more on his story than bible teachings and movie references. What started as a memoir turned into a poorly sourced self-help book. The author writes movie reviews that somehow relate to the bible and brief explanations of how the lessons can be applied in everyday life. I applaud the author’s attempt to try and portray his message to connect with God in an interesting way, but movie reference and lack of explanation are not helping his case. Another area of development I noticed was the author’s writing style and diction. Many times the author writes like he is talking and it comes off choppy and repetitive. I believe this is the case of the author’s first language being Korean rather than English. However, with the editing assistance of a native English speaker, I believe this can be quickly rectified. Even though many parts are choppy the text appears well edited as I found only one spelling mistake.
I am rating Life Changing Stories 2 out of 4 stars. I love that the author wants to share this interesting story. I think Kang has a lot to share and many people can learn from his ideas and establish a great relationship with God. However, there are too many movie references rather than credible arguments. The author spends too much time preaching and not enough time explaining the practical application of the ideas.
I recommend that anyone who is of the Christian faith read this book as a reminder of God’s message for his believers. This text can be beneficial to people who share the author’s religious views, but could be difficult for people of different faiths to connect with.

Thanks for commenting!Stephanie Elizabeth wrote: ↑25 Feb 2020, 06:05 Who awful he must have felt when he parents died, and was made to feel like a burden when he was seeking love. I am glad that he found strength in faith! Thanks for the review!
