Review by Oziafricana -- The Mindset by Ace Bowers
The Mindset by Ace Bowers is a true life story of the author’s disturbed childhood and his testimony to the effectiveness of an ‘overcomer’s mindset’. Recounted by the author himself, it is a cathartic autobiography that enumerates the steps taken by him to overcome his childhood experiences and family situation, effectively enabling him rise from a janitor on minimum wage to a millionaire in five years.
The author takes us through his childhood and his early adult years; his family and friendships are very vividly portrayed. His vivid depiction of his fighting, alcoholic parents, his supportive sister, the stoic unflinching belief of his girlfriend (and then wife) Yuka and his solid undemanding childhood and early adult friendships make the book a very easy read. Having come from a dysfunctional home, Ace walks us through his rough childhood and the shame and depression that resulted.
In essence, Ace Bowers is telling his readers, with this memoir, that anyone can aspire to greatness and success in life once you let go of a victim mentality, purpose within yourself to be happy and take decisive steps to achieve what you set your mind to do. He does not give a detailed, step-by-step account of what financial or career decisions need to be made along the way, so this book may not appeal to a reader searching for concrete answers on wealth generation, career ladder-climbing or financial success. However, it will serve to turn a discouraged mind to the right path. For him, “mindset is everything.” Every obstacle can be seen as a learning point and the key is to never rest on your oars.
The narration is totally from the perspective of the author and even though this could verge on the monotonous, the split into chapters of short lengths keeps the story engaging.
What I liked the most was the dedication of one chapter to his wife, Yuka, who contributed to his success in no small way. Her resilience, faith and strong will are a breath of fresh air in this narrative that highlights his mother’s abuse and alcohol use, his father’s compulsions and his brother’s bad choices. What I disliked most was the length of the memoir. I feel the author still has a lot to say on his journey to the top.
I noticed only one typographical error in the book and would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars as it was a very easy and pleasant read.
