Review by gschauer -- Are Your Kids Naked Online?
This book is a must read for all parents and anyone who works with children. Chris Good and Lisa Good, the authors of Are Your Kids Naked Online? How to protect your tech savvy kids from online self-destruction!, have 20 years of experience in cyber security and information technology (IT). They share their wealth of information to help parents keep their children safe online.
The book includes topics on Smartphones, sexting, sharenting (parents sharing children’s photos online), online predators, social media, cyberbullying, the Dark Web, and other relevant topics. The authors present a plethora of concerning statistics regarding children and online use. For example, “One in ten kids under age ten have seen pornography online.” Another example, “Forty-four percent of kids ages eight to sixteen years old have hidden their online activity from their parents …” The sources of these statistics are in the footnotes allowing the reader to doublecheck the facts. The book does include information on sexting, porn sites, and nude pictures as it relates to keeping children safe.
Some parents feel their children will do fine online on their own. Other parents may feel like the dangers are so great they might want to prohibit their children from any online experience until they are 18 years old. However, neither of these extremes are the best way to help our children learn how to use the internet. In our ever-changing world, it is important for children to know how to use online programs in a safe way.
At the end of most chapters is a section called “What You Can Do”. This is where the authors offer tips, suggestions, and guidance to parents. It gives some great hands-on activities for parents to use as they navigate through the online world.
Humor is incorporated into the book at times. One place in the book reads “Have you ever started playing a game only to look up and realize you have just spent thirty minutes or an hour playing that game?” While reading, I just had to chuckle. I have not only done this, but I have wasted a lot more time than an hour.
This book is relevant and current with a 2019 publication date. It is easy to read and easy to understand. The authors related many of the topics to pre-internet days. For instance, we have always told our children not to walk up to a car and talk to a stranger or get into a car with a stranger. Today with the internet, it is critical we discuss appropriate behavior regarding online interactions with our children to keep them safe from online strangers. It is also important to have many conversations throughout our children’s lives about this, not just one conversation.
Some adults may never be as savvy as the kids in their lives when it comes to online programs, but this book will help them become more knowledgeable about the topic. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is a well-written and well-paced with each chapter highlighting different aspects of technology. I work on the internet constantly and thought I had a good grasp of the pros and cons, but I learned more than I expected. This would be a great book to give as a gift to parents. It would also make a great book study for parents and/or educators.
