Review by JannetteI -- The Mindset by Ace Bowers
Ace Bowers’ biggest challenge was to discover that he probably was in a poverty cycle impossible to break. In his memoir, The Mindset, he is not only sharing his path to become a successful young adult, he also shares his childhood memories, which he never believed he was going to be open to communicate.
The Mindset is a short book, organized in 10 chapters. The first half is walking you through the author’s early life, his adulthood’s struggles, like addiction, overweight and financial issues; and his biggest test in life. The last half of the chapters are about perseverance, friendships, parenthood, and self-reflection.
I liked this book because the author describes the negative and the positive of each experience. It was interesting how he was able to be humble enough to take minimum wage paid jobs but those ultimately helped him to transform his mindset into his more powerful tool. Motivation, desire to learn, persistence and accepting help, were the most important factors in his transformational journey. The way the author’s emotions were described are very inspiring too, he transformed his negative thoughts from past experiences into a positive mindset, through self-acceptance, gratitude, understanding and forgiveness. You will get an interesting perspective of each of these factors and emotions in a way you would not want to stop reading.
I recommend The Mindset to anyone, but particularly to people who tend to internalize feelings or emotions. The author believed he was in a unique situation, but being open about his feelings, later he realized that everyone around him was fighting personal battles too, under his same circumstances. This discovery helped him to understand his problems from different perceptions and he could liberate the weight he was carrying, allowing him to move forward. You will enjoy this book too, if you are curious about how the author’s motivation helped him to identify and accept the opportunities that allowed him to break the poverty cycle he believed he was going to live as an adult.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it is well edited and easy to read. It will keep you interested due to the way the author presented the sequence of events. There was always a new challenge for him to face and you would want to know how he defeated each difficulty until he became the person he wanted to be, mastering his own destiny.
