Review by Shally_xx -- A Portrait of Mommy by JL Coston
Based on the true-life story of Ellawese Darden, the author’s mother, A Portrait of Mommy sums of the life of a strong woman who walked through fire and ice for her family whilst striving to find fulfillment in her life. In the end, her unconditional love and sacrifice for her family led her to the service of the Lord.
Being the only child of poor but hard-working parents, Ellawese Darden, fondly called Peas by her parents, was brought up with all the love and care they could provide her. She watched them love and stand by each other through thick and thin but all that came to an end as one mistake broke up her perfect family and destroyed her dream of being a nurse. As Peas matured, she experienced first-hand real-life struggles and many times, she came face to face with a series of challenging situations. After several failed dates, she eventually found the man of her dreams and got married. In the beginning, their marriage seemed to blossom but by the time they had their last child, it had turned sour. Peas worked very hard juggling all her time between family and work, trying to balance both and rarely having the time to accommodate any other thing. However, a near-death tragic experience involving her child brought her closer to God and from that moment forward, she dedicated her life to serving God.
Ellawese’s amazing strength and courage are qualities I found worthy of emulation. She didn’t have an easy life and so many times she had to sacrifice a great deal for the people she loved but she never gave up and lived her life the best way she could. What I loved most about this book is the protagonist’s positive outlook on life. She wasn’t rich or famous and she did not have the best life but she always had a positive mindset on every situation and believed in helping people when it was in the power of her hands to do so. She sacrificed a great deal for the people she loved and never failed to find the good in every situation. She believed in herself and didn’t allow anyone, not even her husband to convince her otherwise.
There was not a thing that I disliked about this book, it was written so well that no one could ever hate it. The book was captivating and at the same time inspiring. A Portrait of Mommy took me on a roller coaster of emotions: happiness, sadness, anger, pity, empathy, I felt it all. Every scene from this book seemed to come alive to me which I must say is a rare quality to find in a book. I honestly feel that J.L. Coston did an amazing job of bringing this story to life.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book was flawless, written in good grammar and it was professionally edited. I think everyone can and should read this book but I would specifically and most especially recommend it to those who are in the process of discovering themselves. I should also mention that this book would be best suited to believers of the Christian faith.
