Review by giota -- The Mindset by Ace Bowers
The Mindset, by Ace Bowers is the inspirational autobiography of a young man who grew up in a poor and dysfunctional family, but having remarkable willpower, he managed to overcome poverty and become a millionaire. Bowers had promised himself that he would break his family cycle and not repeat the same mistakes his parents did.
Ace spent his childhood and teenage years feeling helpless, worthless and ashamed. He was the youngest of three kids. While growing up, his life consisted of three elements: his brother moving in and out of jail (becoming a huge emotional and financial burden for the family), his parents constantly fighting, and himself living in fear that his friends would find out the truth about his life. His parents, who were high school sweethearts, abused alcohol, fought every night and had no financial discipline. They were living paycheck to paycheck, but instead of saving money, they spent it on buying cigarettes and alcohol. By the time he was a young adult, Ace was already suffering from depression. The turning point came when he finally got a wakeup call and was forced to make a serious decision.
What I liked most about the book is that the author focused on becoming a better parent and provide to his kids the things he didn’t have as a child. As he says in the book, becoming a millionaire was just the aftermath. He had to work really hard in order to get there, he sure had some good luck in his way but he always tried to make the most of every situation. This is the secret to overcome the victim’s mindset. Even as a janitor, Ace made sure he was the best janitor ever.
Another thing I found very important is the message about family relationships. Although he suffered as a child, Ace never gave up on his family. The adult and successful Ace cleaned everything he had been holding onto, reinvented his relationship with his parents and gained a new perspective of them.
I rate The Mindset by Ace Bowers 4 out of 4 stars. The book is extremely well edited, I only noticed a couple of minor errors. It is very easy to read, divided into ten chapters, each one of them dedicated to a specific person or a milestone in the author’s life. There is nothing that I didn’t like in the book, it was so honest and uplifting.
Readers who enjoy inspirational books and memoirs will certainly find The Mindset appealing. Also, people who have experienced a difficult time while growing up will find motivation after reading Ace’s story. This book does not provide step by step instructions on becoming rich and successful, so readers who are seeking such a guide will be disappointed.
