Childhood heartbreak lasts longer than when you are an adult. Ellawese Darden was born in a small country town and raised in a not so well-off, Christian family. Her parents used to work for a wealthy family. When she was still a kid, she heard a dire plan for her mother from one of her mother’s bosses. Innocent, she told her parents about it not knowing what it really means and they did not believe her because she was young and naive. Thus, it came out to be true. At a very young age, she also witnessed her father’s horrifying act that led them to leave their old life in that old town to start a new one in another city.

Everything was going great with their lives, as she thought. Until, one day, she went home excitedly to see her mother and share with her about her day. Instead of seeing her mother, she saw a handwritten note. Clueless, she asked her father about it and learned about her mother’s infidelity. From then, Ellawese lived her life without her mother and a broken family. Now that she lost the woman she looked up to and the woman she admired, she needed to face a lot of challenges alone. Challenges that tested her faith. But instead of wavering, she faithfully leaned on God and trusted Him with all her heart.

A Portrait of Mommy by JL Coston is a non-fiction book based on a real-life story that left inspiration to the readers. This is the story of a mommy who offers helping-hand to a lot of people. Sharing her gift of faith & grace, and helping them change their lives. This novel is worth about 99 standard pages consisting of approximately 250 words in each.

Indeed, the author did a great job of retelling the story of Ellawese. He made sure he told the story in a perfect timeline. The character of Ellawese illustrates the image of a strong Christian, a true believer and one who was honed by faith. She showed how God is so powerful and amazing by letting God be her number one ruler of her life.

I love how Ellawese made herself stand out among the rest of the women in society during the early 1900s. She once said to one of the guys she dated, “If I am not good enough for you to marry, then I am not good enough for you to sleep with.” it may not be the same for all women but for a woman like her, who believes in the sanctity of marriage, who values her self-worth and her beliefs, it was a good exposition of declining a person, even the one you truly love once it means going against your beliefs. I find it very empowering as a woman and even as a person in general. No person should feel ashamed of saying NO when they feel uncomfortable or wronged regarding it.

I initially disliked the guy she married to as well, but, when Ellawese said, “this is the man who I loved and who loved me to the best of his ability", I felt that. It teaches why you don’t need someone who can treat you like a queen or a king, a princess or a prince. You need someone who, regardless of his flaws, can love you with all his heart. Someone who can fulfill his promises to you, and who is willing to be by your side no matter what.

I am giving this book a 4 out of 4 stars. I just love the flow of the story, the book itself actually. Aside from the book is well written and well-edited, I think that this book left an inspiration and hope to many people who are struggling with their lives or to people who got lost in the midst of their problems. The life of Ellawese Darden is proof to the readers that even a strong, independent person still needed someone to lean on. Her life is a living proof that there is nothing to be afraid of for as long as you claim and believe in God (1 Corinthians 15:58).

The only problem with this book is that it is most suitable for Christians or to people who believe in the existence of God since the story focuses on overcoming problems through faith. Though, I still recommend this to non-believers if they are open-minded and willing to try reading this type of book. But, most likely, the non-Christian readers might not like to read this book.
