Idiom Attack Vol. 1 Everyday Living (French Edition) is a short but a great book covering some of the most commonly used idioms in American English. This definitely is a perfect learning material for native French speakers with an intermediate level in English. Although, in my opinion, it’s more suitable for classrooms where the students can be guided by their teacher, I also think that independent learners can benefit from it as it’s clearly structured.

One of the best parts is the structure as I mentioned before. The author Peter Liptak has made sure that the idioms in English will seem familiar to native French speakers as he has provided equivalent phrases in French. I also think that the incorporation of the new idioms in a story at the end of each chapter is brilliant.

Regarding the chapters I mentioned, the book has been divided in different sections based on the topics they cover, for example, housework, dating, sickness. At the end of each chapter there is a small exercise urging you to use the newly learned idioms, a small story with them as well as questions afterwards. There are also illustrations and crosswords after several chapters.

What I didn’t particularly enjoy about this book is the way the idioms are presented in each chapter. There are many idioms, examples, advice and small notes on their usage all given to the reader at once. In a classroom this might prove to be effective as the teacher can explain every single one of them, ask to make practice sentences, etc. But as an independent learner, I find it to be a bit difficult to go through all of them before getting a chance to use them in sentences and practice them.

I have rated this book 3 out of 4 stars as it is definitely a good learning resourse, however, it seems to be mostly aimed at classroom learners and not independent learners. There are a few insignificant grammatical errors which don’t disturb the reading and learning process at all.
