Michael Oborn's Toward Happier Choices is a one-of-a-kind memoir that gives the reader a front-row seat of the life the author describes from him growing up in the Mormon culture to rediscovering a purpose beyond what religion taught him. The author's early life was commissioned by his parents and their faith in the church. Later on, the author discovered that the planned path was not the only way to live and soon sought a new path.
Section one of the book - Short Stories gave a clear insight into the series of events in the author's life. From starting college to the church summoning him for duty and returning to civil life. In this section, I found a few stories which resonated with my life in some way. Two of my favourite short stories are Bohica: The Fourteenth Colony and Independence because of the realization of true life the author wrote about at the time of the interview that was set up for him.
Sin City described the life which the Mormon Church stood against and damned anyone who ventured there. The author was exploring this life and found that it was interesting and began to question why the church taught its followers that it would "send them straight to hell." This brought awareness in my mind about the brainwashing done by many institutions.
The book itself is divided into three sections - Short Stories, Potpourri and Exceptional People. Throughout these sections, the author describes events which impacted his life and how the discovery of the intricate culture which he had known all his life was oppressing others and forcing them to live according to the boundaries set by the church. Despite the intricacies, the author met with people extraordinary people later on in his life.
I love this book and would recommend anyone who has an interest in memoirs, to read this book and gain some knowledge about making happier choices and not those predetermined by any particular institution. I have found this book to be astonishing and have to rethink a few values which I was pre-conditioned to live by without question. As a parent, I have begun teaching my son in a holistic way and not limited to institutional practices.
Generally, the book was edited well though there were a few errors with spelling and grammar. I would rate Toward Happier Choices by Michael Oborn 4 out of 4 stars. Certainly, this book is recommended for parents!
