Christie Lindor writes a compelling book, MECE Muse , about becoming and
maintaining your career as a consultant. The MECE Muse’s title holds a
definition for consulting. MECE (me-see) is a technique on how business problems are
visualized and understood in-order-to solve the root cause. MECE stands for: Mutually
Exclusive Collectively Exhaustive. Throughout the book Christie gives short stories
of consultants and their lives in the field, hints and inspirational quotes.
She breaks down consultants to three categories: POS (point of sale), Role Players,
and Great Consultants. By doing so, you can see the different levels of work,
expectations and results for the clients. You can also see which category you fall
into, and which you are striving to achieve.
She doesn’t sugar coat it nor does she lead you to believe any level you choose - to
be easy; but you find yourself falling in step with the guidance to be the absolute
best and ready to put in the time and the effort. Any career has it’s learning
moments and potential for growth. In this book, Christie gives continuous advice how
to achieve the best of who you are and can be in your career through her experiences
of great success and mistakes.
Christie discusses how to tackle some of your fears. All her advice can be
applied to a career in consulting and any position you may be looking to obtain. One
piece of information she gives, is one mistake many people have made by asking too low
for a starting salary amount. Firms sometimes test the waters and try to save wage
expenses by hoping you will request a starting salary lower than they are willing to
pay. This and hundreds of other pieces and advice can be found throughout the pages
of this book.
I like all the advice and inspirational pieces she writes. On page 136 of the
book, one great piece of advice for not only the subject at hand of consulting, but
which is great for any job search; is that during your research of the company and
position you should look at the lower end and subculture as well. This will allow you
to understand the working levels and culture within the firm before deciding whether-
or-not you want to take that position.
A favorite quote I have taken from this book is used right at the very beginning: It
says so much. “The journey to greatness is infinite.” This quote was written within
a review by Brian Falchuck, a consultant who has repeated this quote by author in his
review and comment.
There isn’t anything I can say that I did not like about this book, how it was
written or its content. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars . This book was
exceptionally edited. It was well written, and even as a book for learning
experiences and information, it is an easy read, has a great flow and keeps you
interested. I would recommend this book for those who are interested in a career for
consulting or just looking for ways to improve in their current career or in search
for the right one.
The inspirational quotes she puts at each chapter’s title pages are great. I
like that she sees greatness as something which is always continuous. You never reach
the end – you simply continue to improve and become continuously better.
By reading her explanations to what she believes each consultant type is and seeing
through her experiences and description of the differences in consultant levels you
can choose to achieve for yourself – it’s like getting the greatest pep talk of a life
time!
