Empowered is an inspirational read about one woman's journey to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds to become a business owner. The book promises to provide a blueprint to help business owners develop their leadership skills and learn to work on their business more than in it.

Part I of the book is mostly written as a memoir with takeaways learned while on her journey. The remaining two parts of the book provide concrete guidance for building the value that your business can contribute to your employees and get clarity around your next steps.

The author's story was encouraging, and I like her transparency in sharing the struggles that she faced in not just becoming a business owner but in her early life.

I had trouble following the book. It felt like stream of consciousness writing and would have been made stronger with additional edits. There was no cohesiveness from subtitle to subtitle, and I had to return several times to the table of contents to understand what topic was being covered.

I would recommend this book to a new business owner who is just starting or one who has never had a hand in running someone else's business. The guidance in the book would not be useful to someone more established.

Overall, I would rate it a 2 out of 4.
