In this non-fiction novel, Following Jesus: In the Age of Trump, the author probes us to reflect on our faith in this modern day. For the more conservative Christian, the book definitely introduces new perspectives and will likely stimulate you into getting out of your comfort zone and think more deeply.

The novel begins with a simulated dialogue between the author, Dr. Mary Theresa Webb, and a ‘collective voice’—a title meant to prevent the alienation of right-wing Christians. This dialogue clearly explains why Christians support Donald Trump and why he does not deserve this support. It expertly showcases the hypocritical arguments many construct in defense of his lies and lousy presidential attitude, yet it contains all the respect and love that Jesus would want us to have.

It is a lovely start to the rest of the novel. The author draws parallels between many themes throughout the book: the Roman Empire and the United States of America; what Jesus’ birth meant then and what it means today. When she mentions the eight Beatitudes, though, she illustrates the obvious distinction between many of our actions and how Jesus would want us to act. By substantiating her claims with verses from the Bible and her own personal anecdotes, the author manages to make a very moving and convincing argument through the use of pathos and ethos.

I very much appreciate the clarity of the author’s views in this book. I appreciate even more how these views are not forced down one’s throat and take into account how a person with an opposing perspective might see things. However, I feel that the parts with Donald Trump could have been longer and more elaborated on. Besides just listing the numerous ways of how he has not adhered to Christian values, there could have been a better explanation of how he did so. Furthermore, it would have been more interesting to provide reasons as to why he appeals to many of us Christians and the psychology behind it. This would make for a more well-rounded ending chapter.

Nevertheless, I rate the novel 3 out of 4 stars. At only 162 pages, it is a short and meaningful read for the average Christian. Moreover, it initiates conversations and gets people to talk. This is especially important since I think dialogue on this topic is paramount. Due to the lack of depth regarding Trump and the repetitive nature of the writing, I did not fully award it four stars.

Of course, since this professionally-edited book is of Christian nature, it appeals most to Christians who live in the United States. However, I think that this book is suitable for interested atheists or people of other faiths. It explains aspects of Christianity rather well and doesn’t fanatically force the religion onto others.

Overall, a profound read!

I do think that with a subtitle of In the Age of Trump, there probably should be some depth regarding Trump. But this does sound like an interesting book that was written to make a point without alienating others.
