Rated 4 out of 4 for the well written and thoroughly edited content of the book.
John Driver's "The Ultimate Guide For The Avid Indoorsman" is remarkably witty, outrageously clever and downright hilarious with his contribution of this charming piece of non-fiction literature. A real pleasure to read that will have you intrigued and smiling as you flip through. On other sections, it will have you deeply contemplating and examining your life as the book describes the various day to day activities of the connection (or disconnect) we share with technology and how we've evolved to spending most of our days indoors. Written with clear passion, Driver truly inspires the reader to be comfortable with modern-day thinking while providing insightful information that could improve our lives.
The beginning scene in the book is provocative for those who are dirty-minded but the rest of the book is clean comedy and I truly recommend this book for anyone who's looking for representation about being an Indoorsperson. What I did dislike were targeted insults towards Outdoorsmen. The jabs using shallow humor in this regard is obsessively unnecessary and does not add to the greatness of the book. I feel that it was forcibly trying to inconspicuously enforce superiority of modern-day revolving around technology. The author's humor comes off as shallow in some cases with his attitude towards those who enjoy the outdoors more than enjoying the indoors. Stereotypical “rednecks” etc, are the designed images his words paint as he avoids using those words directly. The comparisons between Indoorsmen and Outdoorsmen were fine with me. It helped to drive the point home of ever-changing times and the way individuals are adapting further towards luxury and comfort that technology provides as the norm. The insults; I could do without.
What I enjoyed about the book was practically every aspect. The interactive quiz was a great breather from absorbing so much information and allowed me to think about how I'd react to certain situations. Though some of the given choices were a little far fetched for me, Driver's intended purpose was to give a general idea of your comfort level as well as let the reader have fun. I can't wait to reevaluate myself on the quiz at a later date. Finding a non-fiction book that can hold my attention but also be creative is a chore but this book had everything I could have possibly wanted from it. It also is the kind of book I can proudly share with anyone and virtually feel no shame.
The illustrations in the book were adorable. They visually were pleasing and a great room to an already uniquely crafted book. It gave off the adult vibe of Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Almost every journal, professional or recreational, has some scribbles in them that are related to parts of the text. By putting illustrations in it was inviting and gave a personal connection to the reader. Brief historical accounts of how we wound up where we are as a society and the supportive understanding of indoor versus outdoor people. I let out a delighted chuckle every time I read one and was genuinely excited when I encountered another.
This book has it all: discussions about the best snacks to avoid crumbs, the general scraps, and junk food diet as well as delicious drinks that the Indoorman enjoys. A brief evaluation into coffee brewing, clothing/wardrobe advice for the indoors, dealing with various everyday social interactions, and arranging furniture for comfortable living plus much more useful advice to improve your way of living indoors. The “Avid Indoorsman” is written out as someone who is completely immersed in expected modern day living. Having no setbacks as to their adaption to technology and how it affects their world. They pursue the highest levels of comfort that they can afford and therefore achieving the author's labeled goal of “Avid Indoorsman”. All of the information in the book is leading to that level of enjoyment. It is an interesting topic to go on, allowing yourself to do a comparison and see how far on the scale of modern-day living are you truly comfortable with.
