In her book, Empowered, the Business Owner’s Guide to Leadership and Success, author Dominica Lumazar offers good and practical advice about starting a business and, more importantly, how to keep it running with the profit coming in. She lays out the important guidelines to what a leader needs in order to have the support and obedience his employees. The author also gives tips on marketing, branding, finding and retaining customers, establishing relationships that will last, and about effect strategies for maintaining business clarity with your staff and your customers. The book draws from her own many experiences both from being entrepreneur herself, as well as working as a business consultant.

The book is concise and straight to the point, and doesn’t go wandering off on tangents and stories that have little or no relevance to the topic of the book. The fact that she draws much from either her own personal experience of that of her consultants helps to connect with the book and make it applicable for day to day life. I liked how she started the book with a biography of her business life, as it helped to understand where she is coming from and what she is drawing the experience and advice from.

Dominica Lumazar’s gives especially good advice about what being a good leader means and what qualities to strive for. She also stresses on how it is important not to get so full of your work life that you neglect your personal and family needs. This is a moment that many of those who are in the business fail to realize and put into practice, and I believe the book does a good job of helping you to realize that it’s not all about the money but about family and personal life as well.

I did find it a bit too broad and general, which I feel would make it a good book for newcomers to the world of business, but for someone who has been an entrepreneur for a long time there was very little information that hasn’t already been covered in similar books; thus making Empowered, the Business Owner’s Guide to Leadership and Success just one of many. There was little to make it really stand out as something new and different.

At the end of most chapters the author provides a link to a list of resources that she has curated over the years. Also, along with those resources there is a bonus chapter which I felt was rather extra. I do not get the idea of another chapter that is not included in the book but something you have to go through an extra link to get. It felt like a bit of added work.

The target audience of the book is entrepreneurs. The book is aimed both at those just starting on the path of entrepreneurship and those who have been in business for a long time. I would especially recommend it to those who have only recently started a business, as the book gives excellent advice in a brief form and offers other books and resources from which the reader can continue to find the counseling he/she is looking for.

I rate this book three out of four stars

I gave it a three instead of four as there was spelling mistake in the text. I did not give the book a two as the book is well written and filled with advice that many starting entrepreneurs will find useful.
