Executive Hoodlum by John Costello with Larry Elder
Review by Lorrie Ehrenberg

Larry Elder heard John Costello tell stories of his life, most of which he did not believe until he met some of Johnny's friends and relatives. He thought the stories were much too wild to be true. After finding out they were true, he convinced Johnny to write his autobiography. Johnny agrees to write it with Larry's help and inspiration.

John is employed by Microsemi Corporation, a company offering a comprehensive portfolio of semiconductors and system solutions for communications, defense and security, aerospace and industrial markets.

Johnny grew up in Chicago with a mobster father, who beat his mother and mistreated his children. His mother died shortly after a severe beating by his father. After her death, his father marries another woman with children of her own. Johnny's father treats her and her children much better than he treated his own children. Johnny's step-mother does not treat her husband's children well either. They do not feel welcome in their own home.

Johnny's father was a con artist who was continually getting into trouble with "The Outfit" and was lucky to come out of his troubles alive. And he always seemed to charm his way out of trouble or expected Johnny to help him get out of trouble. Johnny tried to help him when he could, even though he was not sure he should, and was also lucky to stay alive. Johnny's father was also a very good singer, the Frank Sinatra type, and everyone, including the mobsters, loved to hear him sing.

Johnny was determined to live a different type of life than that of his father and other relatives, many of whom spent a lot of time in prison. Johnny attended Catholic School as a child and he was the first in his family to attend college. He graduated from college and started a career in the semiconductor industry.

Johnny spent his life trying to balance his corporate life and his hoodlum life. He was often torn between the two. He is tough but tries to be fair, sometimes a very hard thing for him to do. He loves boxing and has gotten into a lot of bar and street fights in his life.

He moves to California and continues his career there. His first marriage ends and he starts partying a lot. He meets stars and "big shots" in California, including Hugh Hefner, and spends time at the Playboy Mansion.

The author's description of the cities he visits during his business trips is wonderful and makes the cities come alive. His description of his friends and family makes you feel like you know them personally.

He meets a woman named Janell and ends up marrying again and they have two sets of twins.
On his 50th birthday, he comes to a realization about his life that he has accomplished what he has hoped to and has become the man he hoped to become.

This book is very interesting and very well written and I give it 3 out of 4 stars. I highly recommend it. It is a good read.
