I rate the book Empowered: The Business Owner’s Guide to Leadership and Success by Dominica Lumazar 2 out of 4 stars. Empowered is a non-fiction work that is intended to give instructions to people in their entrepreneurial ventures. While it contains quite a few anecdotes, the majority of the work gives advice on how to start and run a business.
It is a very quick read. The language, in particular, is interactive and engaging- it feels as though the author is having a one-on-one conversation with her readers. The tone employed is warm and encouraging and this has been maintained consistently throughout the book. The vocabulary is basic and the ideas have been presented with simplicity and clarity. Hence, just about anyone can comprehend the author’s message and benefit from it.
The actual contents of the book are disappointing. It is clear that the target audience is meant to include both people who wish to start a business as well as those who are already running a business and want to improve. The problem which arises as a result of this wide target is that the instruction provided in the book is generic. It would have been a more fruitful endeavour if the book was written keeping a more select audience in mind as the instruction provided could have been more tailored for them. For instance, the author states that it is perfectly possible to run a successful business and be an attentive parent. However, she does not give any concrete advice on how to do so apart from obvious suggestions such as to focus on one thing at a time.
The author shares several anecdotes throughout the course of the book. These are illustrative and, in many cases, charming to read about. Unfortunately, the number of such anecdotes are less in comparison to the banal advice that the author devotes more space to. The majority of the book consists of unoriginal directions such as ‘learn how to read a balance sheet’, ‘go digital’ and ‘take efforts in creating a brand’ etc.
The way in which the book was organised was also problematic. Ideas that should have been grouped together were strewn haphazardly all over the book. It would have been better if the book was organised into three parts: first, advice on how to organise a business; second, advice on maintaining a healthy employer-employee relationship and third, advice on dealing with clients/customers.
All in all, the book is not worth purchasing. The majority of the content is trite and overdone. It does not add to the reader’s knowledge on the subject matter.
