Book Title: Who Told You That You Were Naked?

Author : William E Combs

Who Told You That You Were Naked? is a reexamination of the garden of Eden. Though we are all familiar with the story of Adam and Eve how they got deceived by the serpent and then ate the fruit God told them not to eat. But in this novel Combs asked some questions such as: why were Eve's eyes not opened to her nakedness when Adam has not eaten the fruit?, why was it that when Adam ate the fruit was when he noticed Eve's nakedness? Answering the above questions, the author explained what their nakedness was.

Things are not always same as told or as they appear to. Combs narrated how Eve got deceived, though the story is familiar to every christian but his questions brings to knowledge some things the author of the book of genesis did not explain. The most compelling of his narration was what encouraged Adam to eat the fruit. Paraphrasing what is written in the book of Genesis, God said they will surely die if they eat the fruit. But Eve was standing before Adam claiming to have eaten the fruit yet she wasn't dead, so that can happen to anyone most especially in this technology age were experiment is the best way of finding out the unknown.

The author differentiated the word " ye shall surely die" that God said to them if they eat the fruit from the death we are experiencing today, also known as the physical death. He said death occur when trust, compassion, unconditional love, and acceptance were replaced with shattered self worth. From his examination of the story Adam did not judge Eve's nakedness, he did not see her differently not until he ate the fruit.

Combs wrote about the first instance in which sin was mentioned in the bible and to whom it was mentioned. When God came in the cool of the day to have fellowship with Adam his question to Adam was not why did you sin rather it was Who Told You That You Were Naked? The fruit of knowledge good and evil that Adam and Eve ate bring to mankind inferiority complex. Combs explained how God wanted man to master who he is and not to rely on the serpent deception by asking them that question.

The author gave insight to why God made them clothes from animal skin when they were leaving the garden of Eden. He channeled his reasons to the new testament wherein it is stated without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin. As such the first animal slaughtered in the garden of Eden was an atonement. However, that blood did not cover for Cain that was why sin was able to take over him because he lack the power to fight it.

In this novel he explained the finished work of Jesus on the cross that brought freedom to mankind. This freedom can only be experienced and exercise through faith. Combs gave two kinds of faith which are little faith and real faith. He explained the real faith using the story of the Leper and the Centurion. However, faith through salvation unite man with God, but man must continue in the light of God's word which enable us to walk in his way. The most interesting part of this book was his stated three avenues God uses to assist man in his walk with him. Which are the Bible, God's voice and His peace.

Conclusively, nothing was more compelling in this book than the author's personal encounters, his style of not imposing his findings on the reader by giving room for discussions and questions about each chapter of the book. I read each chapter twice as to find any error yet i found none. His style of writing that make the book cover both old and new testament and how it impacted me will not make me rate the book 3 or below 3. I therefore rate the book 4 out of 4 stars.

I recommend this book for everyone out there who desire to understand the concept "sin" and how it can be overcome. Also to those who want to grow spiritually as to have personal relationship with God. I like to end this review with the author's word that helped me overcome a particular sin I have been struggling with. Don't fight the darkness just turn on the light.
