As stated by author Dominica Lumazar Empowered: The Business Owner’s Guide to Leadership & Success is geared towards someone just starting out with a business, someone who is stuck or unhappy with their progress with their self-owned business or someone who has a business already and is just looking to grow and challenge themselves personally. I would add this would be a valuable resource for someone deciding whether to take the plunge into small business ownership. The author cites 10 years experience with running a business and lessons she learned the hard way which she condenses for the reader.
Much of Part 1 is geared towards leaders of small teams and leadership principles to help in guiding and managing a small team. It is this part that lends itself to a reader who is not only a current business owner, but would be extremely valuable to someone looking dip their toe in the waters of launching a small business. Much of the information and guidance exposes the reader to day to day leadership challenges faced by small business owners. For someone deciding whether or not to embark on a small business that would ultimately involve leading a team of employees this strategic information is invaluable.
As we progress further through the book we find an introductory guide to branding and digital marketing. The author provides guidance on the basics of establishing a brand and explaining what different types of marketing are currently used by small businesses on and offline as well as some basic information around content creation, curation, credibility and customer retention.
Each chapter mentions bonus material with a “list of resources” - this takes you to a landing page asking for your first name and email. Then there is a video you can play and another button to download the resources. The resource list contains several different types of links to resources - they do not appear to be affiliate links and they range widely in content. The bonus chapter is worth the read - I like that the author provides specific suggestions for actions and personal anecdotes to illustrate her point. This bonus content is a very nice grounded focus on developing oneself in order to perform better as a leader. It is a nice addition to the main book content.
I liked that this book provided a lot of tactical resources for improving a small business, including specific tools, links and anecdotes on how to overcome various challenges. However at times I struggled with how general the language of the book was so as to apply to any type of business, I think the author could provide sections or more in depth analyses for particular types of businesses and make some of the advice less general and all encompassing. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because it definitely achieves the stated goal of equipping business owners with concrete steps to make their business more successful and the book was very well edited.
