Health Tips, Myths, And Tricks, by Morton E. Tavel, M.D., is very informative and corrected some of the myths I was taught as a child. His extensive knowledge through his years of experience as a physician had some surprising finds for me. I was shocked at some of the common sense beliefs that I was raised on were actually based on flimsy or absent facts. One of them was stretching before exercise. As an athlete in middle school, high school and college there were rituals the coaches made me follow concerning my workouts. Unexpectedly, all these years later, it seems like I was doing it wrong.

Tavel said, “My initial motivation for creating this book was derived from my research used in preparation of my previous book entitled “ Snake Oil is Alive and Well. The Clash between Myths and Reality. Reflections of a Physician .” When I think of Snake Oil, it brings to mind a black and white western. I see an old man with a wagon pulling into a town trying to sell a little brown bottle with tonic so he can spend the night in the saloon. Back in the old days folks didn't have the methods of communication like we do today, so it's understandable how those myths thrived. Dr Tavel's information comes from a variety of sources including his personal biomedical background experience, scientific publications, media reports, and research by many highly credited institutions and organizations. I liked that while he included many medical terms, he also included common terminology that was easy to understand. I also liked how he organized his thoughts so that the reader could skim through the chapter titles and read what topics they were most interested in.

He explains what the major causes are to many other health problems. He suggests several foods to be included in a healthy diet and provides a list of foods that should be avoided. By combining the basics of diet and exercise he provides tips to healthier eating, how to make better eating choices and how to transition from the bad habits to better habits. He also doesn't just describe physical well being, he also includes mental health issues.

Morton E. Tavel, M.D book, Health Tips, Myths, And Tricks, provided advanced scientific knowledge that can help all people live longer, healthier lives. The only thing I didn't like is that I found his references of overlapping topics repeated, and I was ready to finish reading his book. Therefor I am rating Health Tips, Myths, And Tricks 3 out of 4 stars because there were some misspelled words and formatting errors.
