The book Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks A Physician's Advice by Morton E. Tavel, MD is a very comprehensive book that covers a very wide variety of topics related to health and wellness. I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. While it has a great deal of information, it is like reading a textbook, therefore it is not easy to read all the way through.
The beginning chapters of the book that the author labels "Health Tips" deal with weight loss, dieting, and various foods and how they can benefit you or harm you. The next section of chapters that he labels "Myths" deal with various health/wellness topics such as what to do when you have a cold, what processed food does to us, whether or not sunscreen is helpful just to mention a few. The last section labeled "Tricks" deals mostly with a topics such as alternative medicines and Dr. shows. Within each of these sections, there are many studies cited to back up the author's conclusions about each topic. If the studies are inconclusive, he states that also, giving warnings if needed, and generally recommending that people be diligent in their awareness of what they are buying, eating, and believing.
What I liked most about this book is the vast array of topics covered. I consider myself well informed when it comes to nutrition and what to eat as well as what not to eat. This book added insight and information that was new and more comprehensive than most sources. I appreciated the statistics and studies cited that backed up the author's claims as to the benefits or harmful aspects of various substances. He went into detailed discussion about many myths that we all have been exposed to and goes through the logic of whether or not the myth is valid. In some cases, we still don't know, but he does a good job laying out the facts so we have all of the information and not just the headline.
What I disliked most about this book was the author's tone in the last section labeled "Tricks". Most of this section is his opinion of dietary supplements, the marketing of various non-pharmaceutical products, as well as alternative medicine such as Chiropractors. His opinion, as a medical doctor is very against anything but conventional medicine. I can understand this point of view, but his tone turns nasty and condescending when talking about the people who choose to try these methods. I actually agree with some of his warnings and I personally don't trust most of the claims of these products. But traditional medicine hardly deserves our blind trust when the pharmaceutical companies have gotten this country addicted to drugs with medical doctors either passively or criminally compliant. I feel like this attitude from the author is so unbalanced it taints the whole book.
Because of the wealth of information and the wide spectrum of topics, I would recommend this book to others. It is not a book to read cover to cover, but a great addition to a shelf where one could look up information about a specific medical condition or information about a product to purchase.
