Health tips, myths and tricks by Morton E. Tavel, MD is a book full of health information. Morton E. Tavel is a retired physician in internal medicine and cardiovascular diseases. He says that he was motivated into writing this book when he was preparing to write the book called “ Snake oil is alive and well. The clash between myths and reality. Reflections of a physician.”
This book consists of three sections. The first section (chapter 1 to chapter 32) contains health and wellness tips which aims in helping one have a healthy and longer life. It covers various topics from causes of obesity which could be consumption of sugary beverages to eating more fast foods than home cooked meals, dangerous ways of losing weight for example taking supplement pills which are unregulated and ineffective and safe ways of losing weight for example eating more frequent home cooked meals than fast foods and exercising regularly . This section also gives us a number of foods we should avoid which causes obesity, high blood pressure and heart attacks for example canned soups.
The second section (chapter 33 to chapter 52) has information on myths. Morton E. Tavel states that there was a study that found that health related beliefs were very common. He makes an example of a dangerous myth where by twelve children were immunized to prevent measles, rubella and mumps who developed autism. People concluded that immunization causes mental problems. He states that the numbers of this study was far too small to make real conclusions. He states that other studies were done and found no link between autism and immunization. This made the previous study to be retracted and previous author to be discredited but that did not stop people from refusing or delaying vaccines which make those children to be at risk of developing easily preventable diseases.
The third section (chapter 53 to chapter 62) talks about tricks on how to avoid the dangerous products and information which will cause harm in our body. He warns readers on the use of some treatments which have not been tested and proven to be safe for humans. He covers topics from practitioners of alternative medicine, acupuncture, spinal manipulation and many more. He warns readers that health frauds have certain tricks of promoting their products for example they may pay people who will act as satisfied customers who claim to have had the disease but were healed by that certain product they are marketing. Some of these representatives may be untraceable.
I like the way the author has researched, organized scientific publications, media reports and other trusted sources just to compile this book. He is so passionate about his job. Even though he is a retired physician, he still feels it is his duty to enlighten people about ways that will promote a healthy life and also increases chances of living longer. He has indeed made sure that every chapter has useful information.
There was nothing I did not like about this book although it has a few typing errors which does not detract from the book and could be easily fixed. So I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This book will be enjoyed by people who are doctors, nurses and anyone that reads it will learn a lot from it. Unfortunately those that love taking medications that has not been scientifically proven and those selling those products will not enjoy this book.
