Health Tips, Myths, And Tricks, written by Morton E. Tavel, MD, is an educational book that focuses upon the subject of health. The author discusses a lot of common food items, like coffee and red meat, which feature regularly in the daily lives of people in modern society. By giving details about the composition of each such item, he explains whether the food is beneficial for us, and if so, in what manner and why. Furthermore, the book attempts to clear diverse misunderstandings people have about various common aspects of contemporary life, like the aging of skin and fears regarding using Wifi. Such information has been presented in a very informal way and the work never feels like highbrow.

The book has been divided into three sections. The first section gives the reader information about health and wellness of the body, focusing mainly upon items of consumption. The second section concentrates upon the diverse misconceptions people tend to have about health. This segment highlights activities that people perform regularly, but tend to overlook the effects they generate upon health, for example using hand driers and Wifi. The third section throws light on the different ways in which large enterprises manipulate people in order to make them purchase their health products that often produce dangerous side-effects. Tavel also elaborates upon the manner in which mainstream media networks endeavor to mislead people by giving false or unverified information about health. All throughout the explanations are completely scientific, enlightening the reader logically about the diverse dimensions of this extremely important aspect of life.

Focus upon such different aspects of health makes this book not only an enriching and interesting read, but also an urgent necessity for modern society. This is because it clears a lot of misconceptions that people have, for instance, the false notion that chocolate’s only contribution is the increment of fat. The author explains that dark chocolate is important for enhancing brain functionality and cardiovascular activity. Like in every other case, he gives a science-based reason behind this opinion and presents it so easily that it becomes readable to anyone. I used to avoid reading health books and articles because they tend to be so heavy with Chemistry terms that most of the information was hard for me to understand as I was never really interested in Chemistry. But I had absolutely no difficulty while reading this book.

The book also exposes the diverse unethical methods companies use to make people buy their expensive products with the promise that consumption of such will generate good health. I know of quite a few people who bought such products hoping that they would make them slim. In reality, the outcome was disastrous for their health. Tavel uses science and logic to explain why we should keep ourselves away from consuming such products. The book also recommends certain science-based websites which can be followed in order to maintain good health.

The only thing I did not like about the book is its cover. It can be hard to create an innovative cover picture for a book of this genre, but I feel a little more imagination could have been used here. This would have made the work appear more attractive at first glance.

However, overall, I will definitely rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. The main reason for this is the author’s excellent research and presentation skills. The book provides an in-depth look backed by scientific arguments about a lot of crucial issues and presents them in an extremely readable way. It will help a lot of people by giving them the correct direction regarding their health concerns. Therefore, I will recommend this book to all mature adults since health is an issue that is important to all.
