Common Sense and Reasonable Answers by Warren William Luce should have been titled The God Option. From reading the book I got the impression that the author thinks religion and God are two distinct units. However, I think he needs to make that more than an ‘impression’. If the reader misses this distinction, he or she will find the book confusing and littered with contradictions.

The reason I’ve given this book 3 out of 4, is I feel the title is misleading. As mentioned above, there is much more talk of religion and God in the book than there is of common sense.

The book contains far too many references to religion and God. I think that the books solutions to global issues could have been accomplished without bringing God and / or religion into the mix at every turn.

This book deals with many complex issues that face our world today and offers answers to them. Most of the answers can be summed up in a simple statement, ‘man should listen to God’. While many of his ‘reasonable answers’ can be summed up with that simple statement, he does go into some detail about how listening to God will solve the problem.

Unfortunately, most of his solutions require politicians stop thinking in terms of re-election and getting rich and for religious leaders to ignore church doctrine. Certainly, many of the books solutions to complex global problems would work if politicians and religious leaders were willing to look past their own self-interest.

The health crisis in America is one of those issues that could have been addressed without bringing in religion and / or God. An appeal to people’s self-interest in wanting to be healthier and not be spending so much money on medications and so much time at doctor’s offices, would be as effective as the religious emphasis.

Common Sense and Reasonable Answers was an interesting and definitely thought provoking read. If I belonged to a book club, I would pick this as one for the club to read, as I think it would provoke some stimulating conversations.

The author’s writing style isn’t going to appeal to many of those who could benefit from reading this book. Why? Because he’s writing at a tenth-grade reading level and sometimes above a tenth-grade reading level. The average American adult reads at a ninth-grade level but prefers to read things written at a seventh-grade level. In addition, the constant emphasis on God and religion will be a turn off for some readers.

If you’re looking for a thought provoking read with some good ideas on solving some of our global issues and you can deal with the issue of God and religion as constant elements, then you’ll enjoy this book. I will recommend it to some of my friends as a book to read, so that we can talk about it.
