There and Back There Again by Andrew Alsup is a unique biography, telling a story about protecting privacy, cherishing love and keeping optimism despite all obstacles. The reader can't find out much about the author himself, just that he is divorced and has children that live in a different country and that he visits from time to time.

Alsup introduces the reader into his world through a series of topics. He is experiencing „auditory hallucinations“, as he calls them. He hears voices and describes them as abusive, hostile, immature, and nonsense. These voices are trying to manipulate him, and, as he believes, destroy him and his family. He starts acting paranoid, constantly feeling he is being monitored and threatened. Andy perceives his heart and bipolar problems as an attempt of murder. It is all one big conspiracy, including even the church that uses religion as a weapon.

This biography is written as personal criticism to society and government. It is in the form of personal confession that gives the author an opportunity to express his opinion and to ease his soul. The book is hard to read; it is incomprehensible to the readers, who weren't present in the situations the author is mentioning. Andy doesn't describe those situations; he just explains how he feels about them, leaving readers space to conclude what happened. The author is expressing his opinion in an aggressive way, considering that his basic human rights are endangered. His writing style is unique because it reflects his thoughts exactly as they are. The reader has the impression that he is listening to the author's monologue, as if the author is talking to him in person.

Some sentences, even whole chapters are repeated, with the goal of emphasizing the importance of their meaning. He also added the same text about Edgar Allan Poe twice, that I found unnecessary. One thing I dislike is that some of the text is in bold print, and some is much lighter, which I find distracting. My biggest issue with the book is that it is very confusing and hard to understand. As a perfectionist, I am bothered by Chapter 21 following Chapter 13, without an explanation of what caused that change in numbering.

I rate this book 2 out of 4 stars. The reason for the low rate is a lot of typos, errors and bad language that is not censored. That is why I believe this book hasn't been professionally edited. The book is not for everyone, but for the selected group of readers. I wouldn't recommend it to a young audience, especially because of the heavy use of bad language. I would recommend this biography only to fanatic book lovers who are deeply in love with reading and discovering new styles, as this book is an example of literary work different from those readers usually find in novels, memoirs, and biographies.
