The book, The Mindset by Ace Bowers, is a memoir about the author’s journey from poverty to wealth. He was raised in a home filled with turmoil, financial difficulties, and substance abuse. His childhood struggles led him to have a persistent feeling of shame and low self-esteem. Later in his adult life, Ace started to understand the roots of some of his family issues. However, he only experienced forgiveness and healing through perseverance and the passing of time.
There was a ray of hope for Ace when his aunt invited him to come and live at her home in another state. Eventually, he got a job as a janitor. Also, in the process of time, he met an Asian student who would later become his wife. One day she gave him the news that he was going to become a father. It was this news that led to a turning point in Ace’s life. He did not want his son to have the same financial struggles and unstable family life he had. This motivated him to make a complete transformation of his life. Through hard work and commitment, he ultimately attained the professional opportunities he sought after. Ace is a remarkable success story. He got the family he longed for and achieved the financial success he pursued. The life of Ace is a fitting example of what perseverance, motivation, and positivity can achieve.
I love the resilience and motivation I saw in Ace. His life illustrates that a person does not have to remain in the conditions he is experiencing. If one does not like how his life is, he can endeavor to change it. Many persons in a similar situation as Ace, gave up on life or settled for less than they are capable of achieving. Conversely, Ace found the mindset necessary to change the direction of his life until he attained success. As stated by the author, 'minimum wage does not mean a dead end, but rather a starting point'. With an attitude like this, a person can achieve great success in his life.
I love all aspects of this memoir. I was, nevertheless, disappointed that more was not said about Ace’s sister. Adequate details were provided about his parents and brother, but not much information was given about his sister. However, this limited information did not diminish the positive impact of the memoir.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. This book was well written and properly edited. It is a short book and very easy to read. My interest was consistently engaged as I read each phase of the writer’s life. It lives up to the expectation of what an inspiring memoir should be. Additionally, this book can be of help to many persons in similar situations.
Anyone who feels discouraged about his life’s circumstances can draw great encouragement from this book. Many persons from a broken home may also identify with the childhood pain and shame encountered by the author. His childhood experiences shaped his early life, but he chose to change the narrative of his adult life. It is a great story on how to be an overcomer. Persons who feel like a failure can achieve a life of personal success if they embrace the mindset highlighted in this book.
