For most of us, a simple advert on the television is enough for us to subscribe to a particular pharmaceutical drug. We will take whatever the doctor orders, trusting it will work for us. The story from a friend about a supplement that will help with weight loss or muscular gain will work as well.
Whether it is the television commercial with a star athlete touting a wonder drug, or the nutritional labels on the food we consume, every day we are bombarded with information on food and health products that should enable us to live better and be healthier. How much of this information is true? How do we separate truth from fiction?
Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks by Morton E Tavel, MD. was written to help its reader read beyond the labels. Like the title suggests, the book provides health tips, debunks popular myths, and contains useful tricks to beat the commercial machinery and live a healthy life.
The book is split into 62 short chapters spread over 300 pages. Each chapter tackles a single topic, thoroughly analyzing any information available. This is then followed by a conclusion that directs the reader on the best way to use the information provided. I found this useful, as you get the information (and the sources too) delivered to you neatly packaged. The choice to follow the doctor’s orders is left to you.
The book is easy to read as well. For a book dealing with such a complicated matter, it delivers without any showboating. It is almost as if a friend wrote you a note. Information you might need, such as the F.D.A approved weight loss pill with less than favorable side effects, for example, is clear, crisp, and uncomplicated. Sources are cited too if you need to check the validity of the concerns raised. All of this lends the book an air of honesty and believability. However, it is up to the reader to do due diligence and follow up with their doctor.
I would rate Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks 3 out of four stars. It has been well written with the common reader in mind. There wasn’t much I didn’t like about the book, and seeing that I learned a lot, I couldn’t rate it any lower. It was not perfect though, and I couldn’t rate it higher than I did.
I would recommend this book to the reader who wants to live a healthier life.Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks has enough data, backed by scientific research, to guide you along the path.
