Health-Tips-Myths-and-Tricks: A Physician’s Advice by Brighton Publishing Group, LLC, Harris Drive, Mesa, Arizona 2015, is published against a backdrop of health tips, myths and tricks.
The author of this work of science has had a chequered career. Dr. Morton E. Tavel, MD, now retired, was a highly respected physician specialist in the fields of internal medicine, and cardiovascular diseases. His is an enviable resume comprising of; medical research book reviews; publications and editorials, which have been published in peer-reviewed national medical journals.
The book is broken down into three sections namely; tips covers health and wellbeing; myths covers mistaken beliefs, and lastly tricks which cover scams. By covering the three sections, the author takes a holistic approach in his writing. The wide coverage of topics; use of figures tools and guides; inclusion of supporting references; his application of years of research and biomedical practice to expound further, and deliver his message, makes the book a remarkable point of reference.
The book’s content is eye-opening, practical and touches on day to day life perspectives which any reader can relate to. Where Dr. Morton feels that a remedy is positively applicable, or foods that contribute to a healthy diet should be incorporated, he does so with reservations, leaving it to the reader to make their own personal choice, or for them to first seek professional advice from their physician or dietitian.
The following illustrates one such reservation:-
At Kindle locations 20 of 300: ‘At present the following four drugs have been approved, but all with reservations’.
The author’s style of delivery on the subject matter is conversational, witty, simple and easy to follow, making the book very educating. His inclusion of topics such as the environment, genetically modified foods, the economics involved in production and manufacturing, recycling among others, makes this narrative very comprehensive.
What I liked most about the book is the author's undertaking to provide the most honest and trustworthy scientifically verified information, for this reason, he comes across as a critical and objective writer. That is what I liked most.
What I disliked most about the book is that there was no incorporation of additional charts, illustrations and pictures that would have made some technical parts of the book easier to comprehend. That is what I disliked most.
“I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.” I gave it this rating because it is, by all means, a very interesting read. I did not give it a rating of 3 stars because the book is meticulously edited. There were no noticeable typos, spelling, grammatical mistakes or errors.
The book would most appeal to people, audiences or readers whose way and purpose of life is as mentioned therein, that is to live a long, healthy and productive life. It would also appeal to dietitians, medical residents, researchers, lecturers, and medical practitioners.
