Health tips: Tips, Myths and Tricks written by M.D. Morton E. Tavel, is a non-fiction book about health-related issues. The book is divided into three different categories which are on health tips, myths that circulate about health issues, and tricks that exist in the industry. This book covers a wide range of issues from foods to take for maintaining a healthy body and promote healing to controversial topics on current diets fads and scams on dietary supplements.
I enjoyed this book a lot since the author himself is very knowledgeable on the topics that are written in the book. The author shows a non-biased judgement and considered all aspects of both positive and negatives on the tips provided. The author also practiced caution in giving a final statement as opposed to blatantly agreeing or disagreeing to a particular point of view discussed in each chapter. Despite having written many research publication, the writing style is straightforward and easy to read without the excessive length of sentences which are usually encountered within a similar genre.
The author convinced readers by writing based on evidence and citing previous researches and studies done. Any conflict of interest in this book is funnily denied by the author, as written in Chapter 8: Cranberry. The author even further guides readers to suitable websites by giving web addresses to earn more knowledge on the particular topic such as in Chapter 9: Mercury in fishes. In general, this book is recommended for readers with health issues and those looking to improve overall health. In the tips section, the author elaborated on a variety of different foods that aid in the healing of many types of diseases. Hence the epitome of curing your disease naturally with real food.
This book also targets the general public to improve our knowledge and correcting any misinformation from the internet. In the myths section, the author debunks many issues that are currently circulating, such as GM vs organic food, vaccines and gluten-free diet. Whereas in the tricks section, the author criticizes well-known TV personality and sportsman for being involved in the act of deceiving the public in promoting an alternative route to modern medicine. While most part of the book is a revelation, the author's stress on conventional medicine above alternative medicine is too strong. However, given the author’s background, his point of view is well supported.
My favorite part of this book is how the author repeatedly encourages the consumer to be mindful and to minimize expenditure of health-related products, such as avoiding unnecessary surgery or buying falsely marketed health supplements. Which is truly a breath of fresh air since we have been continuously marketed to purchase products and unnecessary health items which promise good well-being. This book has also been well written and edited. Thus based on the review given, this book deserves the rating of 4 out of 4 stars .
