REVIEW: Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks A physcian’s advice. Health information to liberate us from “snake oil”- Morton E. Tavel MD.
In the book Health Tips, myths, and Tricks, A pyscian’s Advice. Health information to liberate us from “snake oil” by Morton E. Tavel, very comprehensive scientific information on our health has been transmitted in a very simplified manner. He has given the reader tips to the most common health myths and misconceptions. Replacing pure water with sugary drinks consumed daily can go a long way to control the calorie daily intake and control weight. Morton E. Tavel explains dietary supplements that are promoted to reduce body weight and other health ailments as unsafe and mostly ineffective. Stick to the old mother’s advice of eating a good breakfast daily and prevent many diseases and have an improved health. Various dietary myths are explained and the way to apply simple interventions. Trans fats or “the little devils” in our diets that cause bad cholerestol (LDL) increasing heart diseases are really manufactured by the food industry and thus easy to prevent. Read the labels and know the food constituents you are consuming.
Health prevention is better than cure, we need to sacrifice our urge for tasty foods to make the future secure, healthy and long. The author explores the dietary elements of fish and sea food and cautions on its consumption. Need to reduce on red meat consumption as it is a danger to the heart and brain health. Sodium chloride (salt) is still a major cause of high blood pressure should be reduced or avoided. He explores the sneaky way salt into enters our food. It is always buyer beware, read the labels and train your taste buds on this. The author Morton E.Tavis has attempted to give the reader factual scientific information to make informed choices to health. He reveals a lot of falsehoods with sound medical facts and his wide experience in the field.
We are reminded of good health practices: avoid obesity, regular exercise, moderation of alcohol intake and diet rich in fruits, vegetables and low fat. Water, a good diet and simple exercise can alleviate these instead of expensive treatments. The reader is constantly reminded of the simple interventions all around us and it is a choice we make daily. In the end the “snake oil” syndrome is actually shrouded in lack of the right information and this is provided in this bood.
Always have a nice sleep and get many healthy benefits with very little effort. He unpacks the myths in Wi-Fi internet, immunization vaccines and genetically modified foods. The author Morton E. Tavis warns us of the information and taste manipulation by the food industry, the press and social media. Heeding to the right information does not only improve on our health but the money we spend on health myths and scams.
I like the way the author Morton E. Tavel has communicated in a very simplified way for different types of readers. He reveals ways on how food companies and manufacturers hook us on unhealthy diets, falsehoods on products like Diet supplements, probiotics, weight loss remedies. This book helps to fill the gap in health information delivery and no wonder the “Alternative medicine” practioners will heed the call. I found it difficult to find information I liked least in this book, but on “advice” on food to avoid or consume the tips given are very localized yet this book has aroused a global audience. I recommend this book to everybody who cares about his or her health but mostly to all health practioners, people in health communication, social workers. Good health is a choice and Morton E. Tavel has given us an informed choice. I rate this book 4 out of 4 it has been well presented and edited and reference point to healthy living.
