Despite resisting the title of ‘expert’, Christie Lindor has proven herself just that with her premier guide to business consulting and office finesse. The MECE Muse: 100+ Selected Practices, Unwritten Rules, and Habits of Great Consultants is an indispensable guide to how to land your dream job, build trust with your team and clients and how to achieve the work-life balance. Born out of a drive to be the mentor she's always desired, Lindor walks readers through every step of the process with rapid-fire pieces of advice she's gained over her 15+ year career. Championing her passion for inclusivity and diversity, Lindor also shares the interviews she’s gathered from dozens of other successful consultants, condensing their best advice on building a great career and a life you will love. The wisdom and practicality contained in this “Mutually Exclusive and Collectively Exhausting” guide easily extends beyond the world of consulting to help you achieve success in any relational situation or board room.
In a highly competitive industry, Lindor could have taken this opportunity to self-exalt and fill this volume with humble-brag stories about her great success in this space. Instead, she shows her true colors as someone genuinely seeking to assist and inspire others no matter where they are in their career. She shares both her triumphs and stumbles with a hand extended to help others through their own, whether they be brand new to the industry or well-seasoned professionals. With accessibility in mind, each topic of the book is broken down into easy-to-digest portions in a conversational, fully-defined tone. Chapters are also sprinkled with quotes, tips, and insightful interviews to help readers process the abundance of information. She assumes nothing, thoroughly covering every technical, relational and practical angle of every subject without falling into redundancy or jargon.
Lindor makes each subject incredibly easy to refer back to as well, arranging the themes of the book into 3 sections (and further, related subsections): The Mindset of a Consultant; Performance and Conditioning of Great Consultants; and Reflections of a Consulting Career. As if this weren’t enough, she tops her comprehensive guide with pages of Appendix resources – a Starter Pack Toolkit of recommended books (organized by study topic), consultant services, websites, and podcasts. Her ambitious endeavor to cover such a vast scope of information is masterfully combined with an ability to deliver the information in a refreshing, breezy tone. Seeking to instill the “great habits and decision-making skills” that will make a consultant successful, Lindor teaches the art of communicating and negotiating, how to manage people well and how to build integrity and honesty in your work to gain the confidence of your peers and clients alike. Essentially, this is the story of how to be an unforgettably wonderful businessperson, as well as a fantastic human; and that is something we could all use a lesson (or refresher course) in.
I would give this read a 3 out of 4-star rating for its timeless wisdom and savvy guidance on navigating offices, airports, and relationships as well for its stellar readability. The only area where the book stumbled was on the grammar. In attempting to achieve a conversational tone that still covered the myriad of technicality expounded, grammar was sometimes sacrificed on the altar of casual conversation. Overall, the small grammar flubs were easily forgivable given the vast scope of information contained. Great storytellers such as Lindor are easy to excuse for their minor (although plentiful) technical offenses when they produce such powerful work.
Although I am not a consultant, Christie Lindor’s passion was so infectious that I may seriously consider a career change. Regardless of your own title or status, The MECE Muse is a must-have if you are seeking to better yourself, your relationships or further your career in the business world. It is an inspirational read that is sure to leave you motivated, focused and well-equipped to take on any challenge you face – be it airline delay or balking customer. Be inspired – read this book!
