Health Tips, Myths and Tricks, by Morton E Tavel, MD, is a compilation of his advice, as a physician, on health and wellness. The author discusses a variety of topics, including: weight loss, supplements, conspiracy theories on health and health scams. The author always backs up his claims with sources. He lists additional sources of information, such as websites and books, throughout the book. He also includes conclusions at the end of topics. The conclusions recap the main ideas and give his opinion.
The book is divided into three main sections: tips, myths, and tricks. In the first section, tips, the author gives some tips for better health and wellness. He discusses measures to take and measures to avoid. The second section, myths, is devoted to common misconceptions about health. He debunks the misconceptions with research and provides his opinion, as a physician, on the matter. The third section, tricks, focuses on scams used to take consumers money. The products these scams offer are often useless and can be potentially dangerous.
I really enjoyed this book. It is super informative and interesting. I gained a lot of knowledge I didn’t previously have. I like how the author lists the chapter number when he mentions something he has already discussed. This allows the reader to refer back to the previous information. The author also lists the chapter when he mentions something that he has yet to discuss.
The only negative I have is in chapter 43. The author discusses whether it’s better to dry your hands with paper towels or a blower in restrooms. At the end of the chapter, he states that toilet lids should be closed before flushing to prevent contamination. While this information was valuable, I felt like it didn’t really flow from the previous paragraphs. The entire chapter discusses drying hands with towels versus blowers, but then ends the chapter with the reason toilet lids should be closed before flushed. It confused me a little because that information really didn’t fit in well with the other information.
I rate this book 4 out of 4. It was very well written with only a few grammatical errors. The author was straight forward with no nonsense. I would recommend this book to everyone, especially those interested in health and wellness. This is a great book for those wanting to improve their health and wellness. I think anyone could benefit from the information in this book. It has a lot of great advice.
