[Following is a volunteer review of "Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks" by Morton E Tavel, MD.]

The book Health Tips, Myths and Tricks by Dr. Morton E. Tavel is a sort of manual aiming to help us understand the sciences in our body and to achieve the optimum of our health with applicable solutions in a daily routine. Tavel also debunks some of the most common beliefs and scams of our time.

The author decided to divide his book in three parts: tips, myths and tricks. Even though they sound very different they are linked in many ways, each completing the other therefore adding information to their subject in common, which I find very pleasant to see the different aspect a topic can have. Firstly, the tips section aims to present evidence on a certain question someone could encounter on a day to day basis, e.g. if green tea has any health benefits or certain foods to avoid. By presenting studies and researches made by reliable sources, Tavel encourages us to form an opinion on the subject. He then concludes with his own professional thoughts to wrap up the subject. Then the second portion of the book is all about demystification. Myths often start as trends but are never really backed up with scientific facts, which can result in dangerous outcomes. An example could be the belief that raw milk is better than pasteurized milk, but if you read this chapter you will be faced with a lot of alarming statistics making anyone think twice. Finally, the last section addresses all the traps we could fall into when it comes to magical potions or snake oils as Tavel calls them. He explains where those quack doctors and phony medicines can be found and how to recognize them and as always, he finishes each chapter with his conclusion.

I really enjoyed reading this book because not only does it provide helpful day to day tips, it also gives achievable solutions to be healthier in our body and our mind. The author wrote in a familiar yet structured way which really feels like he engages with his audience. Even though this book is of a scientifically/medical nature, not once did I have to search a term, he is always careful to explain in a sentence what it means. This really makes this book accessible to everyone, science connoisseur or not.

Although I believes that this book is on the verge of being perfect, I think that a down side for me was the fact that most of the statistics and studies were from the U.S and I would have been curious to see a little more of a global view of some subjects. On the other hand, I understand that it might require more researches worldwide and I don't think it affects the outcome of the book that much, so therefore it didn't affect the rating.

Overall, I found that reading this book made me learn a lot of things that are applicable in my life to make it easier and healthier. The way it is written makes it fun and not boring, but we can still appreciate the knowledge of Dr. Tavel through his well-structured, experiment-like chapters. I really believe that anyone can read this and finish it having learnt something they will remember all their life. I give it 4 out of 4 stars, strongly recommend!

I like how the author did a thorough research and presented a reliable dietary bible to his readers. (His points weren't dogmatic.) And like you, I learned a lot from the author's writing. I even decided to be referring to the book for better diet advice. Incredible review.

Thanks for the rveiew. I am also in support that the author could have considered including some statistics from outside the U.S. though it may not be a major flaw since a good research can be repeated and the results will be the same.

In the 21st century there's nothing as important as health. Especially now that there are uncountable diseases brimming out. I'd like to know more about my body and how to keep it healthy. Thanks for a great review.
