(NOTE: The cover of the book I downloaded had the title of “TIPS, MYTHS, and RIPS: A Physician’s Advice” by The Care Group, LLC. However, the opening page states the title and author as, “HEALTH TIPS, MYTHS, AND TRICKS: A physicians Advice” by Morton E. Tavel, MD. For the purposes of this review, I will be referring to the latter.)

We live in a world where we are constantly being bombarded by advertisements and advice on how to take care ourselves. Dr. Morton E. Tavel, MD, attempts to educate readers on what is beneficial and what to ignore, regarding health and wellness, in his book “Tips, Myths and Rips: A physician’s advice”. With his expertise, and countless professional publications, in internal medicine, Dr. Tavel debunks and asserts his opinions on various concerns and issues in his three-part book.

The first part, “tips”, focuses on giving help to those who want to make a change in their everyday health. Majority of the book is focused on tips to help readers live a healthier life. This section of the book gives advice on a wide range of topics such as, weight-loss, smoking, exercise, sleep deprivation, a variety of advice on foods and much more.

The second part, “Myths”, touches on common misconceptions that are presented to us everyday by the media and even some medical experts. From vaccinations, organic foods, stretching to even air travel, this section explains why popular beliefs in the population are untrue. Not only are many theories debunked, but healthier alternatives are also given to readers.

The third and last part of the novel is labelled “Tricks”. It evaluates many scams that are presented to the population by company’s that are just trying to make money. From TV talk shows to paid endorsements by professional athletes, the author basically calls out the media and drug companies for their false hope and possible dangerous results by advertising untrue claims.

What I liked most about this book was that even though it was a very factual based book and it had the potential to be a heavy read, the author was able to make it very easy to read and even added humor in it. In a book like this, I never thought I would catch myself laughing. The author was able to speak to the audience in a way that they could understand (“layman’s term” if you will) and touched on everyday issues that I feel majority of the population deals with. “Tips, Myths and Tricks” would be a great read for any type of audience as there is something in the book that everyone has either seen (on the media) or heard (from myths) in their life. The author gets his professional opinions across without coming across as “preachy”, but rather gives readers alternatives to a healthier lifestyle and also has the appropriate, concrete examples to back it up. The only thing I didn’t like was that most of the studies used to back up the authors research were from the early 2000’s. Now his book was published in 2015, so that’s not the authors fault and should not take away from the book’s credentials, but it makes me wonder if any of the studies have changed on the topics in the book? Is their new data?

I gave this book a 4 out of 4 stars and not a 3 because I loved the way the author wrote. The book kept my attention and introduced issues/ health concerns I never knew about many things I either eat or do. He didn’t make the book boring to read. Also, the book appears to be professionally edited and his footnote references are cited exceptionally well.

Overall, for those who are curious about how well we are currently treating our bodies, I highly suggest reading this book as you will be surprised to find out we aren’t treating them as well as we think.
