Lauren Powers' Beneath the Muscle indeed gives you what it says on the cover: personality underneath the muscle, unleashing your inner champion. I enjoyed the book through and through and thoroughly. I’ve read quite a number of books on positive thinking and living and I can say this one beats the others because of the author’s own life experience and its total practicability.
Lauren Powers, America’s 10 time heavyweight bodybuilding champion doesn’t only talk, she walks the talk alongside you. She’s also included a magnanimous gem for you – a free downloadable ‘Inner Champion Workbook’ that’ll help you along chapter by chapter.
Says Lauren Powers, ‘I wrote Beneath the Muscle to inspire and motivate others to be true to themselves and recognize their own power’.
You cannot but be immensely benefited by this book.
Lauren was born to parents barely out of their teens and the marriage lasted not more than three years and the couple separated as friends. Though her father remained close to her she grew up with her mother and grandparents and a host of loving and supportive aunts and cousins who gave her a memorable childhood.
Says Lauren of herself, she was different and always living out of the box which made her a little unpopular at school and the subject of many a bullying. However, she had a stubborn streak that never allowed her to say die. From a young age, she was an adamantly determined person. When she has to do something she will do something, come what may. She will jump in with both feet and do whatever it takes to reach her goal. Fear of failure is not an option for Lauren Powers; she always believes you never know what lies ahead until you try. Giving up is certainly out of the question; if something doesn’t work out, shift gears, find new directions but keep moving but never throw in the towel.
To excel and reach the top is her ambition and she would keep on with dogged resolve once she’s decided - which often times was impulsive - without wasting time deliberating. There are no pre-set limits for Lauren; she sets those limits. That’s how she became adept at multiple skills – skateboarding, firefighting, business administration…you name it, and Lauren Powers has gone and not only done but excelled in it!
There’s a lovable streak to her character as well which goes alongside her desire to be on top – the deep desire to nurture and help others. Pushy as she may seem she also wants to lend a hand to others to reach for the stars. She’s far from being self-centered and has no envy or covetousness, only the genuine desire to assist people. One example of the positive outcome of this trait showed during her stint as one of the few female firefighters. She fought and paved the way for a change in rules that later helped many other female firefighters after her in that male-dominated-and-oriented profession.
Lauren Powers’ life isn’t without deep lows. She fell in love with ‘champagne and cocaine’ from her early twenties to early thirties and went all way down that road to perdition. She was in deep trouble. Then one morning she realized she was ruining her life, wasting away all that she has so painstakingly earned. It was then that she decided enough was enough and abruptly ended her drug-controlled lifestyle just like that, in typical Lauren Powers fashion –by jumping with both feet. Once she’s decided she never looked back.
I love the positive outlook of the author that rubs on you. She herself leads by example, from the front. She discusses, for example, how you can positively handle bullies by looking at the source behind the bullies’ behavior rather than blaming the bullies themselves. She takes in the good with the bad, drawing from the energies people expend to her advantage because she says, no matter how well-meaning you try to be there will always be naysayers and back-biters. The important thing is never to allow yourself to be affected by negativities around you. When you play, play to win. If you don’t win, consider that loss to be another opportunity for you to learn.
Life, says Lauren, is a journey, not a destination.
I love the book for its sheer honesty, like accepting people as they are and understanding the reason they behave the way they do. Never shy away from seeking a mentor to learn from when you must; don’t reinvent the wheel when you needn’t. Value relationships, seek the truth and create space for others too. The book inspires not in the dry, philosophical fashion but in a pragmatic and pleasantly human way. Each chapter begins with an inspirational quote from great people which itself is inspiration enough.
It is rare to see complete persons like Lauren Powers. She is the epitome of human achievers: she is everything rolled into one – skateboarder, surfer, biker, business graduate, CEO, ballroom dancer, actress, yoga instructor, writer… the list seems endless. What’s even more amazing is she turned to body-building when she was forty!
That’s why I love Lauren Powers’ story. I give the book four out of four stars. It also appears professionally edited; I couldn’t spot any typos or errors in it.
Having immensely enjoyed the book myself I recommend Beneath the Muscle to everyone. It is bound to produce a deep, positive impact on anyone who reads it seriously. It will peel the mask off and reveal the inner champion that stays hidden inside every human being.
