As the title suggests, in his book Health tips, myths, and tricks, Morton E. Tavel (MD) provides the general public with a throughout examination of common misconceptions and concerns about human health. In addition, he suggests changes to improve the reader's quality of life and avoid preventable diseases. The topics included in the book fall within a wide range, from weight loss, to the use of sunscreen, to genetically modified foods. The author aims to make matters as simple as possible, as to avoid getting the reader more confused than they already may be.

As a response to a continual flow of often mutually contradictory information about important health issues, the book breaks down hotly discussed subjects in an easily understandable way. It warns people about scams they may encounter and it also debunks plenty of misinformation that has been widely spread through the years. The book proves itself trustworthy since it is based in several scientific studies and trials, which are properly listed at the end of the book.

As opposed to numerous claims that are usually made by people motivated only by sales profits, this book seems unbiased and honest. It does not recommend any kind of expensive product or service to guarantee the reader's well-being. On the contrary, it offers tips on how to avoid buying into certain traps.

On the subject of the level of complexity of the text, I would say it is quite understandable by a previously uninformed reader. The language used is simple, while also providing some medical terminology which may come in handy in a reader wants to do further research on a certain topic in particular. Furthermore, the explanations given are complete without being too long or overwhelming, thus achieving the purpose to inform a wide audience.

I would recommend this book specially to people who are in the pursuit of better health and need a reliable source. It can help them overcome the obstacles of searching on the Internet or recurring to mainstream media informers, since these sources are often confusing and may cause excessive distress. Moreover, it can spare them the troubles of buying useless or potentially dangerous products, or of subjecting themselves to scientifically unproven procedures. However, for a more informed reader, such as a health proffessional, the book might not contain anything new and may be a waste of their time.

To conclude, I give this book four out of four points since its explanations were frankly very clear and straight to the point. The author seemed unbiased and the information reliable. It was informative without being boring or exhausting. I found no significant mistakes on the editing either.
