Review of Health Tips, Myths And Tricks: A Physician’s Advice By Morton E Tavel
Genre :Non-fiction
In a digital era, where people are often susceptible to misleading information, health related ones included; Health Tips, Myths And Tricks: A physician’s Advice by Morton E. Tavel, is an eye opener.
Tavel has tackled a wide variety of health concerns. Ranging from diet pills, toxins in foods, trans fats, bottled water, super foods, supplements, hypoallergenic dogs, GM Os, Wi-Fi and many others.
He has succeeded in his quest; to debunk health related myths, dispense much needed wisdom and advice, and sensitize the reader on the red flags to look for, with regard to snake oil salesmen and their products. The extensive use of facts and figures from reputable scientific journals is an added bonus for the book.
Reading the book was a very enlightening experience, I liked that. I also liked its credibility, owing to the author’s background as qualified health practitioner with many years of experience.
I did not resonate with Tavel ’s firm opinion, which appears to suggest that science is the only solution to all medical problems.
According to him, any medical procedure or product that has not been subjected to scientific research and tests is not worth believing. In page 450, for instance, he dismisses alternative healing methods like acupuncture, Oriental medicine, herbalism, holistic medicine and the like; claims they have “unsubstantiated methods and claims.”
Yet, in the same book, he does affirm, that some conventional health practitioners have incorporated alternative medicine methods to conventional approaches. Obviously, science may not always have all the answers if conventional medical practitioners are including alternative medicine in their practices. And for that reason, I felt he ought to have given alternative medicine better press.
The book appears to be hugely skewed in favor of the American audience. Whether this is intentional or not, is hard to tell, but he uses examples drawn from the American experience on numerous occasions. In Pages 55 -58, for instance, he attempts to explain the dangers of foods high in saturated fats and sodium, by using examples from foods that only Americans would be familiar with. Audiences who are not from America may not relate well with certain portions of the book
I rate this book 4 stars out of 4 because it is very informative, well researched, and excellently written. This book is not just for health nuts, but just about anyone who cares about their health, and that of their loved ones, and also how they spend their hard earned money.
