Different health fads always crop up almost anywhere in the world. While some of these fads truly help, most of them are questionable and even harmful. It is hard to know which of these health tips might actually help, that’s why as a consumer, we always have to be on the lookout. The book Health Tips, Myths and Tricks is written by physician Morton E. Tavel to help one distinguish the truths in different health craze and help us be more of a mindful consumer.

In his book, he discusses a wide array of health tips ranging from the effects of eating breakfast to different health regimens. Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks are divided into 3 sections discussing different health tips myths surrounding common “cures”, and tricks that most of the marketing advertising to reel in more consumers.

What I like about this book is that it is really helpful for everyone, no matter what their age or profession is. After all, if it’s all about health then everyone for that matter should be concerned. The author cited different studies that helped him establish the facts well. The author makes a strong case against these health fads that are mostly harmful in a conversational and deliberate way. The author did not only focused purely on health issues but also discussed the different implications of health in terms of economic and environmental ways. The author’s way of writing is persuasive but it is well-informative and easily understandable by everyone. Since the book is well-organized by its subject matter, it is easier for the reader to go forward or back to the chapters that they think are more relatable to their situation without having to go through the whole book.

The only thing that I didn’t like about this book is that there are sometimes that it contradicts what it has established. One example is that the author upholds the FDA’s decisions in regard to functional foods and herbal supplements, however, in another chapter it questioned the FDA and its apparent lack of employees in its poor records in protecting consumers health. I know that an organization is not always black and white but this contradiction would make the reader think twice about the credibility of the author if they caught this small discrepancy in the book. Other than that, I really like the book and its well-delivered advice to the general public.

I give Health Tips, Myths and Tricks a solid 4 out of 4 stars as it tackles the different health issues with ease and it is well-informative as well. I would recommend this book to anyone concerned about what they are consuming and how their lifestyle affects their health.
